Can't seem to find a starfield play mat

By agenttherock, in X-Wing

Sorry if this question is in the wrong part of the forum. This may have been addressed somewhere but does anyone know why the play mats are consistently sold out? I have been wanting to pick up a plain starfield game mat but can't seem to find any anywhere, none seem to be available from local game stores either (Toronto area, Ontario, Canada), I can't seem to find any on Amazon or anywhere else I usually buy from online and I don't even see other designs of mats very often other than the occasional Bespin mat and even those are becoming scarcer. Anyone know how often ffg reprints mats? Even if they aren't reprinting the other mats the starfield seems like one that should be reprinted.

Ffg has not done a reprint on the mats in a very long time. In my honest opinion, your best bet is to find a third party mat you happen to like and buy that instead.

That's fair, anybody have any idea why they aren't reprinting them?

Probably the same reason they haven't been producing other products due to the Corona Chaos.

I mean sure but this has been like a year before the pandemic at least, but I'm sure that's contributing to it now.

There was talk/rumors of issues with cost of production, of changing printers, etc etc

Ok well, good to have a possible reason anyway, thanks

Take a look through these.

There's a big mix of mats for different type games, but they've got several space mats that might work for you.

Thanks! I'll have a look through them

I found a new Death Star I mat (my second choice) on eBay for a not terrible price a while back, after much searching for a Starfield mat all over the web. A friend also bought me a generic space mat from our local game store that's pretty good, they don't match/lineup perfectly but well enough for a 6 by 3 foot Epic Battles game, or two smaller games at once.

FFG LCGs often have nice mats as prizes or promotional items, shame they don't do the same for X-Wing. The size probably makes it impractical or too expensive.

Actually, they have done. Pretty much every System Open tournament up until this year had them available in limited numbers. This was the last one from 2019 (Death Star over Yavin):

2018 had Mandalore:

2017 had EIGHT different playmats, one for each of the different locations the Opens were hosted in - Endor (Seattle), Hoth (Chicago), Kashyyyk (San Diego), Lothal (Nuremberg), Mustafar (San Antonio), Naboo (Syracuse), Tatooine (Madrid) and Yavin with no Death Star (Birmingham), plus there was also one for the Coruscant invitational. There was also an event-exclusive plain starfield playmat at one tournament, if I remember rightly.

2020 is the first year they didn't have a playmat for the System Open Series. Probably a wise decision, considering how it's panned out :(

You can also snoop around your local Barnes and Noble(s). I've seen some lying around in there, and was actually able to pick one up a few months ago.

Here’s some more options:

https://tablewar.com/collections/fatmats/products/3x3starfield
https://www.etsy.com/shop/GripMats?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=769501977

I actually have a GripMats mat for another game, and like it pretty well. I’d consider buying a 6x3 space one for epic xwing some day, but I have my 2x 3x3s for standard game (star field and Mandalore SoS mat)

I would be happy to see those system open style mats get a retail release. Especially one with Courscant or other Clone Wars planet. I would not mind having an additional plain starfield. Or Courscant in the Bespin or Hoth style. Maybe Lothal.

Is there possibly a hold up with getting mats into 2nd Edition style packaging?

Also those thing are really expensive and difficult to ship.

I ordered a Starfield map from my local store about 9 months ago. It finally came last week. If you're willing to wait until next year, you just might get one!

This is unlikely, since they've continued to print mats for newer and upcoming games (Outer Rim, JiME, Marvel Champions, the upcoming X-Men game).

My guess is that "new hotness" mats sell a lot better than mats for their X-Wing/Armada game which have (1) been around for the better part of the last decade AND (2) have a lot of alternatives on the market.

Demand for FFG X-Wing/Armada mats is probably pretty low. Maybe Clone Wars stuff dropping for Armada will see a reprint or some new space mats, but who knows?

You know what would be a legit for a 2020 official mat? Concord Dawn.

All the Clone Wars stuff particularly the Armada seems to me to demand a Courscant mat. I have three mats but would probably exercise poor impulse control and get a Scarif Gate and Courscant if produced and another Starfield were they made available again.

What about something like half mats? One half plain starfield and then match it with a half of all sorts of images. Then one could have a bunch of options without needing to get entire mats? Maybe add some sorts of scenarios around the image? A half with the mining facility from Rebels where they stole the fuel and met the Purgills and so forth.

Maybe I just have a thing for mats. Those skirmish mats for Imperial Assault almost got me to jump in there. Luckily my impulse control isn't that bad.
