Wiki is now a disaster and it's Fandom's fault

By Wazat, in X-Wing

Amazingly, Fandom wrote a post today saying they're halting the forced conversions to address feedback. I seriously did not expect them to care about the feedback they were getting, but apparently someone was listening? Or they had a massive dive in user engagement showing they were killing their business. Always a good reason to yank the choke chain of whoever insists on plowing forward no matter the cost; the cost just got too heavy, little guy. Whatever the reason...

We're going to get some tools to manage comments on user walls and articles, and to track malicious/spammy image uploads (so those of you still uploading naughty fanart and viruses to the Sonic The Hedgehog fandom, hurry your time is limited!). And they'll fix how lots of wiki stylesheet entries and other customization was getting wiped by the conversion bot. They're fixing the broken editor by bringing back the old one (for now). And finally, they're adding some nebulous "accessibility options for neurodiversity", which I hope includes making the dense wall of text on Recent Changes more parse-able by normal humans (it looks designed for scripts not people, especially compared to the highly functional Wiki Activity it replaced).

But I plan to re-enable article comments when they roll out the change (assuming the fix works, of course).

Glad they seem to be listening and getting more flexible about their roll-out policy. What a nightmare this must have been.

Another update: All our infoboxes are converted to the new "correct" format. They're made of weird, non-wiki-markup stuff now, so I will have to relearn how to do them to add fields etc when the new ships are close to launch.

Important Update: Article Comments are re-enabled!

We now have the ability to monitor for new article comments, so I've turned them back on. People can now post comments on wiki pages like normal. Link .

Posting Images

If you want to post an image from the wiki, make sure to trim the url after the file extension.

You want this:

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/xwing-miniatures-second-edition/images/5/5b/Swz16_boba-fett.png

Swz16_boba-fett.png

Not this:

https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/xwing-miniatures-second-edition/images/5/5b/Swz16_boba-fett.png/revision/latest?cb=20180703025248

latest?cb=20180703025248

Trim everything after Swz16_boba-fett.png (so the /revision/latest?cb=20180703025248 all goes away).

If you have any questions about the wiki's current status, what's going on, or how to do something, ask here or on the wiki and we'll be happy to answer. It feels good to have article comments back, since that's the main way people reached out for help and suggestions!

Huzzah! Hopefully this all gets better-I'm just glad you've decided to stick things out.

I'm just worried everyone will have left, given the month of chaos that broke half the things and especially took away their ability to ask questions. But given time I assume some of those people will find the wiki again and realize it's functional now.

Question for you all:

We need to figure out what to do with the Products page now that the tabbed view feature is dead. I'm thinking just a list of link buttons similar to Divinity Original Sin 2's Skills and Crafting pages on Fextralife. Users won't be able to change tabs on the main page without changing pages (so they won't be on the main page anymore if they click a wave), but it at least keeps the old easy-to-navigate system intact.

Thoughts?

Huh, comments work again? Just seem to load really, really slow.

As for products, couldn't they just be listed like ships are?

Well we used to have the ability to view the latest wave along with the pictures, and users could switch waves by clicking a tab. I'm inclined toward something visual like that.

Also I'm told the Ships table is too cramped for mobile and I need to work on that. :D Ideally I could gather all the ship icons too.
