Yet another stab at Palpatine...

By Irate Pooka, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I'm confident this is a terrible idea. And every single time I try Palpatine and don't really like the results, I "quit" him. But I haven't built a standard fleet in a long while, and so I started messing around. And as long as I'm using something that is unlikely to work, why not use Dominator and a pair of Gauntlets? 馃榿

Palpatine (55/399/400)
======================

Victory II-class Star Destroyer (85 + 73: 158)
路 Emperor Palpatine (35)
路 Wulff Yularen (7)
路 Gunnery Chief Varnillian (6)
路 Disposable Capacitors (3)
路 SW-7 Ion Batteries (5)
路 Quad Battery Turrets (5)
路 Dominator (12)

Arquitens-class Light Cruiser (54 + 8: 62)
路 Skilled First Officer (1)
路 Linked Turbolaser Towers (7)

Arquitens-class Light Cruiser (54 + 8: 62)
路 Skilled First Officer (1)
路 Linked Turbolaser Towers (7)

Arquitens-class Light Cruiser (54 + 8: 62)
路 Skilled First Officer (1)
路 Linked Turbolaser Towers (7)

2 x Mandalorian Gauntlet Fighter (2 x 20)
Lambda-class Shuttle (15)

Station Assault
Fire Lanes
Intel Sweep

Yularen lets me keep my engineering token to replenish shields I spend on attacks. LTT on the Arqs help with dice fixing there, while Varnillian and SW-7s help with dice fixing on the Vic. Dominator and Quad Battery Turrets can grant me an additional 3 blue dice. All said, at medium range, I can throw 6 guaranteed damage on a turn when I'm using Palpatine. The Lambda moves my objective tokens when I inevitably go second, and the pair of Gauntlets can slow down enemy squadrons with their 7 hull or hit enemy ships with Raid if allowed

Ha! Someone else who actually uses MGFs. I'm not the only one!

I mean, I'll use them in theory... 馃榿 Up to this point, I've only ever used Gar in RitR and loved him. But each build I center on Palpatine disappoints me. So I'm trying some things I never considered before, such as the MGFs, the shuttle, and Dominator.

I've always been stuck on either a complete squadron build, which makes me ask why I'm not just using Sloane, or on the Arqs/Decimators build, which I'll never fly better than duckbird anyway. So I'm messing with a base that I think works and then adding in stuff that...almost certainly won't work, but in my head, might? Yeah, that's where I'm at.

I thought that everyone but me disliked Dominator. I really like it. The ability with QBT to throw a 15-dice double arc on one turn is spectacular. Of course, you have got to survive the next turns without any shields.

I feel that the Gauntlets are a poor choice, though, and would suggest Bossk and IG-88, or Bossk and Zertik, as a pair of similarly priced options. Bossk is a murder wagon with the dial set to 11.

Oh, I'm not really a fan of Dominator. At 12 points on a ship that can be tough to include in a fleet, I have never done more than glance at it. That said, there's no competitive play until 2021 at the earliest, it seems, and nothing new until December. So I'm going to try things I've never tried before. That includes the Gauntlets, which I agree are likely a poor choice. I picked them for their Rogue and high hull more than anything else. Though, as you say, Bossk is excellent and is likely far, far more effective than the Gauntlets! This is just me trying out some things that I *could* see working on paper, but think are unlikely to actually work, but testing them out anyway because why not? At this point, I'd like to question some of the "conventional knowledge" I've personally developed that may be holding me back from trying some different ideas.

One thing I've found to be useful with the Gauntlets is their speed of 4. They're outgunned by Decimators, but sometimes that extra speed is key.

I think a Gunnery team would do more good than Gunnery chief

The gauntlets are definitely in a tricky place, for their cost.

Personally I think ffg was a little worried about the raid tokens & decided to err on the side of caution when costing these guys.

Checking them against other rogue options...

Firespray gives you the same effective anti-fighter (and stronger anti-ship) in a package that is only marginally weaker (but also cheaper)

Decimators are stronger in all respects (except speed). The only thing holding them back is being heavy (meaning they don't make a great fighter screen).

Ig88 & Ig88b come out at 2 points more expensive than a pair of gauntlets. They're actually faster, & the scatter token makes them generally tougher despite having a little less hull. They can't really do anti-ship, but they're excellent against fighters.

There may be other options, but that's what comes to mind at the minute. The gauntlet doesn't pay for it's points all that well unless you're planning to capitalise on the raid tokens

I'm aware or all that, and am fond of the IG twins as well. I like trying different things, and I was using Decimators on most lists, so I changed up. I partly picked the Gauntlets to be contrary, but then found them to be better than I expected.
