Sleeve Replacement

By NulEnvoid, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

I’ve only just found out that FFG are discontinuing their sleeves as Asmodee is moving that production to Gamegenic, execept the sleeves are different dimensions - apparently FFG’s were 66.5 x 94 mm and Gamegenic are 64 x 89 mm which leaves a problem with sleeving going forward and my question - Does anyone know of a good proxie that won’t be noticeable?

i really don’t want to have to change sleeves on everything to date just so things match. Such a dolt move on Asmodee’s part.

I've used ultro pro from the start for all of my LCGs. They are not the same, as FFGs are longer, but it might be worth switching over. Ultra pro isn't going anywhere anytime soon and they work really well.

Edited to add, I suspected something was up with FFG switching all of their cards to standard size in X-Wing and now Armada. Asmodee is trying hard to cut costs, I'm sure card sleeves is one of those areas.

Unless you want to buy up on the FFG sleeves while they're still available some places, you're probably better off switching to a different brand. I'd personally recommend doing it now, rather than trying to keep the same sleeves and running out of them when the game is twice as large and you have to resleeve a far larger quantity of cards.

If you want to switch to solid-colored sleeves, this is the spreadsheet I threw together to get an idea of sleeve numbers. I personally bought Katanas--they're around $12 MSRP for 100, but I've bought most of mine for more like $8.50 on average, which isn't too much more expensive than the FFG sleeves, and the quality is much higher.

Edit: The alternative is to keep using the FFG sleeves for the encounter cards or player cards, and switching the other to new sleeves. But again, you'll only get so much mileage using FFG's sleeves before you inevitably run out 😕 Unless you find a lot and stock up.

If you want to switch to solid-colored sleeves...

I opted for colored sleeves from the start (despite the constant de-sleeving probably should have went clear for the Heroes that don't shuffle - but they are easy to pull this way)...

I use Black for Villains and Main Schemes and Environments that dont shuffle

I use Dark Green for Obligations/Nemesis and Encounter Cards (makes them easy to separate when pulling a deck and putting it away).

I then use 8 colored variations for 2 Heroes that share an aspect (a box of 100 gets it done fairly easily with plenty left for replacement):

  • Black Panther/Black Widow with a shared Justice deck (also Black)
  • Spider-Man/Ms Marvel shared Justice deck B (Burgundy Red)
  • Captain America with Leadership deck A to be paired later (Sky Blue)
  • Iron-Man with Leadership B to be paired later (Yellow)
  • She-Hulk with Aggro A to be paired with Hulk when he arrives (Light Green)
  • Thor with Aggro B to be paired later (Royal Blue)
  • Captain Marvel with Protection A to be paired later (Aquamarine or Mint)
  • Dr. Strange with Protection B to be paired later (Orange)

That's my general plan to support the first 16 Heroes with quick pair-and-go (of course things may evolve with each release).

After that I suspect that everything after 16 will be stored in a separate unprepared container.

Thanks for the tips and advice, I’ll most likely desleeve the lot and find something stable as a replacement.

Although having said that, FFG haven’t given stores any warning either and have created a bit of a shortage of sleeves in general (at least in my part of the world), which is then compounded by Covid.

Yeah, there was an unfortunate lack of warning 😕

if you do go colored sleeves, I will mention that you can do just 2 colors very easily—one color for player cards, and one for encounter cards. And you can always keep the clear sleeves you’ve got on any double-sides cards so long as you don’t mind a potential slight size difference, since they’ll never get shuffled into decks.
