It isn't a huge issue, its just one more problem on the pile.

It isn't 'totally different.' It is subtly different.

Correct, but this wouldn't work at two important angles: Forward and back.

It isn't at all. It uses similar box like geometry and large flat control surfaces ala Rebels, rather than spherical hulls with large flat non-wing panels, pods (though rebels use them for engines, they still are similar structures). It looks far more like a rebel ship than an Imperial ship, and if you showed it to someone who didn't know it was an empire ship and asked 'Is this a rebel ship or empire ship' I suspect most would say rebel: Evoking the Lambda shuttle doesn't offset how it doesn't just not share any visual similarity with the other TIE designs, but actively takes aspects of the rebel aesthetic.

It actually wasn't. At all . It is from that same era as the E-wing when ships were made more geometric and fighter-jet like, the 'Battlestar Galacticaifcation' of EU ships.
It has very little visual similarity to a Lambda. Different wing angles, fixed wings, different wing numbers, a different hull, a different cockpit setup, a different wing shape, ect. It actually looked nothing like a Lambda and even in the original X-wing it was actively confusing because it looked so much like an X-wing in game. It was redesigned over time to fit the imperial aesthetics better, and I would assume a new version would be more 'Lamdba like' by adjusting the cockpit positioning so it wasn't on quite as X-wing like a fuselage but it... just doesn't actually fit the way imperial ships look that well, which it has one of the least consistent visual designs (not even accounting for the different configurations) of any Star Wars ship: People constantly tweak it when putting it into a new bit of media because its design is so strange and out there compared to other Imperial ships. People keep trying to tweak the cockpit and wing shape to make it look like something out of an Imperial shipyard.
It doesn't mean I love it less, I want it in the game, especially because it is a spiritual successor to the original X-wing videogame. And I don't think the silhouette is the main thing keeping it out. But I just think its unlikely for a few reasons, one of which being I suspect Disney would rather make a new TIE than bring back a classic ship, and Disney values the visual uniformity of the 'bad guy' factions especially highly, and the entire appeal of The Gunboat is that it stands out very dramatically from the rest of the Imperial Fighters.
But lets hope down the line I eat my words.
