New Playmats for Clonewars

By SithLrd88, in Star Wars: Armada

I know nothing has ever been announced, I don't think even hinted at, but do we think down the road after rollout we'd get some new Playmats? An actual 3x6 would be great, but even some 3x3 with some Clone Wars locations would be nice.

Possibilities: Felucia, Coruscant, Kamino, Geonisis, etc.

I'd bet money (well, $5 anyway) we'll get at the very least a 3X3 of Coruscant. We have a New Hope mat. ESB mat. ROTJ mat. TFA mat. I would be shocked if we don't get a ROTS mat.

Whew...I thought for a minute when you said TFA mat that there was a Jakku mat I had missed...then I realized you were probably referring to the Starkiller Base mat.

I'd love that, myself. All three of FFG's minis games will now have Clone Wars-era content, too. And battles were fought in/around Coruscant (if not on-screen, in novels and comics) in all three eras FFG is covering with their product lines.

Feels like Naboo, Geonosis, and Coruscant would be the likely ones to me.

2 from ESB - Hoth and Bespin

Not to burst any bubbles but I have been waiting for a Rouge One mat since the movie came out, either Jedha or Scarif but not even a hint and currently all FFG mats are out of stock. Not sure if they are getting out of the business or Covid has made it difficult to manufacture them. I'd buy a Coruscant mat but I am not holding m breath.

A Coruscant playmat, you say ?

The last new playmats FFG made available to purchase were the Legion ones in 2018. But as of at least early 2019 FFG were producing new playmats as prizes/bonuses for X-Wing System Opens.

I wonder if their lack of new ones is anything to do with the cancer warning on the product pages...

I've never been an XWing player so I didn't know they had unique prize mats. Was there others beside Coruscant? Are they insane to get on the third market?

I'll still just wait and see. And Hope. Rebellions were built on Hope.

Scarif would be so dope.

I had seen that mat before; it looks terrific.

As for cancer warnings... well, I live in California. I see cancer warnings pretty much anytime I'm in a public place . 😂

For the second question, no idea; there's a Hoth one on Ebay for $190, so I suspect they're pretty rare to buy.

As for other ones, from what I can find there is a 2019 Yavin/Death Star one, a 2018 Mandalore one , and eight similar mats with the same layout but different planets (Endor, Hoth, Kashyyyk, Lothal, Mustafar, Naboo, Tatooine, and Yavin) from 2017 ending with the centred Coruscant one. But disclaimer; I don't play X-Wing any more, and never made it to a System Open.

If we get Naboo or Geonosis, I think that the Bespin and Hoth mats should be their model -- I'd like to see some distinguishing features from a "low (low, low) orbit" perspective. Theed Palace or the Geonosian battle field would look terrific. For planets like Coruscant and Jakku, I think a more distant perspective would probably work better. Either way, I'm a mat junkie, so I'll probably be buying.

ALL of the XWing System Opens had Unique Prize-Only Mats.

Because of that, I expect we will never see them.

Not in that planetary format.

Likewise, 3x6 mats won't happen, as FFG produces mats in-house and can only print 3x3.

Naboo, Theed palace zoom in

Coruscant, wide shot centered on Jedi temple

Those would be the two I want.

Geonosis, Kamino, Mustafar, would all be cool too though. I like having different mats because when we run events we call seats by planet/range instead of table numbers. If folks share and bring an event mat for a planet that's already there, like Hoth had, that's one range, and the production mat will get called the other range. Plain Star field is just called the deep space table. So Bob and Susan at Cloud city, Mary and Tom in Hoth Atmo, Jane and Greg in Hoth Orbit, etc. I'm sure we not the only ones but it makes it more thematic and fun.

Once we even attached an event condition to it and tracked each planets as a progressing campaign for that planet over the day. At the end deciding whether each planet went light or dark by however the total matches played on it went that day. Don't remember what we did with it though. I think it just determined who got first pick from some extra prizes we had in back stock.
