RTS Mod for ToI v1.1c is ready for playtesting!

By NeoPhysix, in Tide of Iron

The RTS Mod for ToI is a modification for Tide of Iron that has the goal to recreate the gameplay experience of a RTS (Real-Time-Strategy) videogame, ie. gather resources, build an army, research upgrades and fight for dominance.

All you need to play (rules, ref-sheets, markers and 'scenarios') is included in the 'R'TS' Mod for ToI v1.1c file that you can find in the scenario database in the ToI Support section (link: app.fantasyflightgames.com/tideofiron_scenarios.html , scroll down to 'playtest scenarios'). You will need two copies of the 'HQ Reference Sheet' (one for each player) and one set of the 'Research Markers' that are included in the file. The page with the 'Research Markers' has enough markers for both players so you will only need one copy of it. I suggest glueing the front and back side to a fitting piece of cardboard before cutting.

The Mod is in an early stage but is fully functional. I edited the rules to be as clear as possible and to not confuse you with my comments and ideas for the game. I therefore hope that the feedback will be as unbiased as possible.

If you have any questions, concerning the rules or their intention for example, please feel free to ask.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Thanks and have fun!

Update:

I have put a new version online with an alterd RTS1 map that addresses some balance issues.

Feedback:

  • the bidding for initiative mechanic went down really well with my playgroup
  • so far, multiple strategies seem to be viable
  • as expected, mortars are very powerful and they play a big part in the early game [i already have some optional rules in mind but I would like to wait for more data before any changes are made]

Where is the link to this mod?

Sounds like a great concept but hope it will be different from Company of Heroes online. Ive been recently getting rather frustrated with the nature of COH because it devolves into a game of who is quicker to react and also has a lot of hacking going on. Ive seen quite a few games where a player had used the right mix of units and good tactical judgement only to have units take strangely high number of casualties and opponents units take none. Likewise, mobs of infantry moving at faster than possible speeds moving around with near invulnerability in front of armored vehicles and machinegun crews is an obvious sign of a flawed program. Flamethrowers advancing in the open against a machinegun or infantry squad would get exploded when bullets hit the backpack carrying combustible fuel. But in COH that never happens, which leads to insane unreal tactics like mobs of flamers roaming around because the player knows there is no risk.

So I have been looking for something slightly different which focuses more on tactics and strategy, reasonably probable stats for the units and somewhat more realistic outcomes of engagements. Thats one of the reasons I play ToI. Its one of the few minatures games of WW2 which is both highly playable, fairly accurate in unit firepower and range, and really nice graphics quality. So good luck with your game design and hope its a success.

P.S. Where do I find the Mod? I couldn't find where you were said it was in Tol Support. in fact where do you find ToI support?

Man am I an idiot. Thought that someone had actually made some kind of computer version of TOI. Wrote a whole diatribe about my problem with CoH before I realized it was a scenario. Didn't know that so many people had made new scenarios while I was away in RTS online gaming. But hey, does anyone think TOI could be made as a computer game with maybe some minature images fully detailed and painted and an AI opponent for free online gaming?

Scroll down all the way to 'Playtest Scenarios'.

Just to be clear:

This mod is a ToI (the board game) scenario that emulates RTS gameplay and not an RTS that emulates ToI mechanics gui%C3%B1o.gif

As always, have fun!
