The Republic: The best faction or falls short on every front?

By Norell, in Star Wars: Armada

In the podcast there was a claim that the Republic will feel like a bit of the Empire and a bit of the Rebels. It will have is and powerful Star Destroyers (Venators), but instead of Imperial Raider-like close-range support ships it will Rebel CR90-ish small supporters. We didn't see all the ships yet, but what do you think? The Empire has great capital ships but its small ships are only good at short range, unless you kit out your fleet for red dice mitigation (Cymoon with Kittens, or Kitten conga) The Rebels on the other hand have great small ships at long range (TRC90s, Ackbar MC-30s), but they don't have great capital ships, all of them have some serious shortcomings (H1 broadsider and slow, Lib is a glass cannon, Mc-75 lacks long range punch, and Starhawk is very expensive).

What does this mean for the Republic? Will it have the best rounded-out fleet similarly threatening at both long and close range with both large and small ships? Or will they make every ship just slightly inferior to its counterpart (Venator is not quite an ISD, Consular is not quite a CR90 etc.) with an overall mediocre fleet that doesn't excel at anything?

@geek19 I think I win

I think we'll see the keyword differences between ship variants enable specialization through upgrades dependent on those keywords, so the bare ship might be an all-rounder that doesn't excel at anything, but it can be built to be best-in-class. I think with the proliferation of pass tokens they're going to discourage running lots of bare ships/padding lists, to encourage adding upgrades to ships.

Ahhh to make the game slower.

If they're not better than the current factions, very few people would actually buy them.

I don't think "better" is not the appropriate word.

I would suggest "unique " but the same balance as rebels and Imperials.

We have to wait and see how FFG designs the ships but I hope that the Venator is not an ISD grade battleship with better carrier capabilities. The Venator deviates heavily from Star Destroyer design philosophy by sacrificing anti-ship firepower for carrier capacity and that should be the in-game focus.

Oh boy! I sure am excited to see the GAR get released and introduced to the rest of the world! I have always been a Rebel player and been jealous of Imperial, front-arc power punchers. Being able to orient your ship pointed towards the enemy, and chug along spewing death seemed attractive while I attempted to broadside the enemy with some ships, and kiting with others (and I know the LMC80 exists but it's just not as points efficient!)

So, seeing the GAR come into the fold, and operate in a hybrid space, I am chuffed! If the Venator ends up falling inline with what most expect (a ISD-lite carrier), then wonderful.

As far as whether they will be the 'best' , I doubt it. As it stands they are just so so limited by card pool (I mean they only have 2 publicly released admirals/commanders for the time being... they can't really compete). I'm eager to revisit this in January of 2022 once we have a few more waves under our belts.

It seems like the fighter game will likely be more of a focus for both Republic & Separatists. Hopefully with increased boarding mechanics as well.

Which will be great for diversity in the game.

A witty phrase I've used to discribe peoples' reactions to the acclamator maybe apt at describing the GAR as a whole with "Vic but with the fat trimmed off". If GAR is imps with the fat trimmed off then there could be a few signs of excess trimming in shields . One of the issues glaring at me from the GAR oddly comes from the revealed title card "Impacable". The Acc. has the lowest shields among each factions starting medium. The title's utility toward squads is good but its asking for shield resource spending on a ship after said expence would be poor. The suggestion here could be the GAR are so teamwork oriented to point of detrimental self-sacrifice. Remember, This is a game about ships after all.

All I know is that there better be an Order 66 card that your opponent is allowed to deploy at a time of his or her choosing, in which all of your named Jedis are removed from the table. ;)

If I had to guess, the general patterns seem to be (with exceptions)

Imperials seem to be the stand alone specialists. They don’t really build a network of supportive abilities as much as make a fleet of potent individuals.

Rebels seem to be the generalists. They build most things to be able to do a bit of everything, sometimes standing on its own and sometimes through teamwork.

GAR will be THE teamwork faction. Most units helping others. I’m also going to guess less confidently that they will be specialized units as well, but not so extreme as the empire.

I haven’t quite worked out how CIS will feel.

Ooh, Palpatine and Anakin can be double-sided with a flip effect!

Unfortunately I don't see keywords on, for example Obi-Wan, that mechanically identifies him as a Jedi.

The Republic was weak. Endless squabbling and debates in the Senate achieved nothing. A strong response is needed for dissent..hence the Empire. Citizens, when you see stormtroopers marching in your cities and star destroyers orbiting your homeworlds know that dissent on your planet is of concern to the Emperor! Always remember,"The Emperor will take care of you".

Not at any time. When the Republic won. That's the whole point.
