Future expansions for the republic

By mattmaclaren31, in Star Wars: Armada

So after the venator and pelta, the republic will eventually get the light cruiser..but uhh what else after that? Maybe the stealth ship? For the separatists, they have tons of options. Lucrehulk, bulwark, ohmi support ship, malevolence, etc. The republic doesn’t really have any large/medium ships other than the venator and acclamator that I know of? So I guess what I’m asking is: Is there any ships in legends you guys think will be introduced? Or will they make new ones like the starhawk/raider etc?

Posted in another thread, but:

  • Victory-class in Republic colors (technically canon via a novelization)
  • Yeah, the stealth ship seems likely
  • Obviously the 'Jedi Light Cruiser' (Arquitens)
  • I can't imagine they WOULDN'T do standalone expansions for the Acclamator and Consular
  • CR-70 corvette (as seen in Episode III)
  • J-type 327 Nubian royal starship (possible flotilla - it's a bit larger than a Gozanti)
  • J-type diplomatic barge
  • Dreadnought-type cruiser (which has appeared canonically in 'Rebels' as the Imperial Support Vessel)
  • CSS-1 Corellian Star Shuttle (from Episode I - also appeared as a token in the core set of 1st edition X-Wing...another 'unarmed flotilla' option?)
  • Paladin-class corvette (IE., 'Jedi Training Cruiser' from the Clone Wars CGI series) also a possibility

That feels like enough "seen on-screen" we probably won't need to dip into Legends/EU.

There are a few options for much larger Republic ships, most are barely mentioned in canon (like a sentence) or are legends but could be reintroduced.

  • Mandator-class Dreadnaught
  • Praetor Battlecruiser
  • Maelstrom Battlecruiser

There's also the option of doing a Chimaera to the venator. A reskin with different ship cards and upgrades.

Depending how well the soft-reboot of Armada to 1.5 does, I rather expect the Venator and Acclamator to both see re-releases in Imperial colors, for the Empire faction.

So...I can't really see FFG doing yet another repaint release for them within the Republic, with that assumption.

And beyond that, honestly, given the list I have above - I think that's the full extent of what we'd be looking at. I mean, keep in mind FFG still has to consider the 'original trilogy' fans who have kept the game alive all these years! After the 'Clone Wars wave 2' release, I imagine we'll be down to 50/50 splits in waves of Clone Wars and GCW-era ships, meaning at most 1 Republic ship (and 1 CIS ship) per wave after that. Presumably they won't do all of those 'canon' options, but that's more than enough for them to pick and choose another half dozen waves at one-ship-per-wave, so...

The Chimaera ship expansion made sense because Thrawn's flagship with its distinctive paint job was established in Star Wars Rebels. However, there weren't any distinctive Venators in the Clone Wars that would warrant a repainted ship miniature in a late Wave expansion.

However, more ship cards and bases are a great idea. It would be great if FFG created a new ship and squadron pack, similar to the Hotshots and Aces pack for X-Wing SE, which just has new cards and cardboard. The ISD Kuat and Cymoon Refits were great; I think most GCW ships would benefit from one or two new ship versions -- or updates to the existing versions -- because at least half the ships have one version that is rarely ever used, for good reason. Changing those under-used versions or adding new versions would greatly benefit the GCW factions in Armada.

The FFG guys did allude to a collection of updated ship cards being released in the future. As long as they're releasing ship cards in the standard-size card format, it would be a good opportunity to add new ship versions -- and possibly updates to squadrons cards and new Ace squadrons.

Actually the resolute(Anakin’s venator) had a red painted bridge, all other venators have a grey bridge. So the chimaera re-release of a venator(being the resolute) would actually be pretty sweet, and anakin could come in as a commander

Ummm... Why would they add these? They are not military ships, have no weapons at all, they are not even good starships just look royal, and most of all, tehy are civilian vessels! It would make 0 sense to include them.

*cough*

...why? Because they are iconic. One of them was pretty much the centerpiece of one of the movies.

Yes but the rebel is an underdog faction that will fly anything they can get there hands on. The republic is a galactic wide goverment with its own navy and war ships. It makes no sense for them to be fielding unarmed civilian vessels

Perhaps they may have to come up with their own design ala Raider.

Im concerned the Republic will be light on designs that had significant screen time or popularity to justify a model - eg: stealth ship. Which I was never that impressed with as a design to begin with.

This is what I would like to see, more options for existing ships including the new clones wars stuff.

One option I think could be viable is if they design the maelstrom, I know it technically has a design already but it’s “not cannon” so let FFG work their magic and design a gorgeous large/huge ship for the republic to counter the malevolence/lucrehulk

Since we're getting keywords on ships such as "Transport", there could possibly be others like "Diplomat", maybe even a campaign with objectives that are like a VIP escort. Or perhaps titles/officers for Diplomatic ships that could have a major influence on objectives, like it should be treated as having a higher command value for the purpose of objectives - Contested Outpost for example.

I think in the comics (probably Dr. Aphra?) at one point Palpatine gave Vader a J-type and he kitted it out with weapons. If they're willing to do cross-faction boxes then maybe a Republic version is pretty weak and dependent on objectives to be valuable in a list, but an Imperial version is a proper combat ship.
