Huge ship idea: tri-fighter missile tubes

By Matanui3, in X-Wing

Given that this is something the separatists were known to do, and the text on marg sabl closire, it wouldn’t be surprising if the first Separatist huge ship came with some sort of upgrade to launch tri-fighters as a sort of self-guiding missile.

Bonus points if they can launch one at the beginning of the engagement phase, though that might end up a little strong.

You mean in addition to their booster config?

What did you have in mind? I think there could be some fun design space there. Maybe a configuration to dock trifighters and launch them during the engagement phase. . .

I'm not really seeing it for anything smaller than a Acclimator or Munificent. The necessary missile tubes would need a bore diameter of a little under 3.5m and with the normal length to diameter ratios of missile (3.5 to 4x or more longer than they are wide) you're looking at missiles of roughly 10.5m - 14m long. Not much space for that in corvette sized capital ships with any appreciable magazine capacity.

I mean, we have docking rules. If Separatists eventually get some sort of huge ship that can dock a few Tri-Fighters, fine.

As an ordnance tube of some sort that launches them as missiles rather than ships??? I kinda don't think it works.

I'm with Fig. Just dock'em. If want to to "shoot" them out, add the Intercept Thruster and use it when you deploy.

That said, I feel like this should TOTALLY be in Armada.

I'm a bit perplexed about how you're meant to use that booster config linked action. SLAM->lock is handy, but you're not shooting on the turn you use that ability, so putting yourself in lock range feels risky

If you've SLAMed way past to safety, however, it might work out well. Lock now, so that when you're not disarmed next turn, you'll have it established.

I can't really see it being good if launched mid-game, however. For the start of the game, this gives you a tonne of speed to really dictate how you engage.

Thematically, I can see it representing a ship that's already been launched from a Munificent or such off-board.

You can always put advanced slam on them, calculate and launch discord missiles as it is not an attack technically. Disrupting their formation on pretty much round 1 would be juicy. Dial in a 5 straight, slam 5 straight, advance slam for a calculate, launched discord using a 3 template right in their grill. Rinse and repeat 2 more times. That is to say of they have a mod slot. I assume so since the other Droids do.

I love this idea! It's flavorful and pretty cool. Not sure how it would impact balance, but they could always go the cautious route like with the hyperspace rings, making it usable in casual/epic play only. Ya know, just in case huge ships make their way into hyperspace and extended some day.

The idea was mostly to make it an upgrade for Huge Ships that allowed starting the game with tri-fighters docked. For flavor it would probably use at least the missile slot.

That'd be cool. But just make it a cargo slot. It would be funny to simulate the high speed launch by putting on the cargo card that you *must use slam when you undock. That would also make it interesting to how you deploy your huge and time your launch.
