BX droids with E-5s rifles.

By Flurpy, in Star Wars: Legion

So I've been thinking. We get 7 droids in the BX box and only one Sniper rifle. You get 4 B1 in the Upgrade B1 box including a E-5s rifle. Since I already need two boxes of B1 upgrades for other reasons how plausible is it to put E-5s on BXes and call them snipers? Would people mind the conversion?

Theoretically with some creative conversions you could assemble 3 BX Sniper strike teams from a box of BX and two boxes of B1 upgrades.

Sounds like something you just have to bring up with your opponent and tournament officials. Chances are you'll need the cards if it's an official FFG tournament anyway, so might as well use the BX-Sniper that comes with, but if you're just playing locally, I don't see why you couldn't just proxy some snipers.

The game isn't wysiwyg, so as long as your opponent isn't confused then it shouldn't be an issue. Obviously cards for tourneys not withstanding

The game isn't WYSIWYG for upgrades to vehicles (and a few others), but any card that specifies a specific mini to be added, and the units themselves are WYSIWYG.
From the RRG Page 77:

Some upgrade cards feature the heavy weapon (󲊀) or personnel (󲊁) icons; these are trooper upgrades.

» Trooper upgrades add specific trooper minis to a unit, represented by unique sculpts to easily identify them. These minis always share the defense value, wound threshold, and weapons of the unit card they are equipped to, but may have an additional weapon of their own.

Then there's the OP rules about ensuring your units are easily identified, and not significantly altering the shape of the models. So while vehicle weapon upgrades are not WYSIWYG, personnel and heavy upgrades are per RAW.

I seriously doubt that anyone would notice that the BX droid was carrying an E-5s and not the BX Sniper if you didn't say anything, so I can't imagine it would be an issue. But, as others have stated, for official events you will need the cards, so you would need to actually own the correct number of BX units anyway, so it kind of defeats the purpose for that use. But for casual games, go nuts!

[angry grumbling intensifies as I lose track of my E-5C B1 Trooper on the board every time]

What about that point from the rrg says he couldn't mod it? They have said time and time again mod your stuff just make sure you don't make it confusing to your opponent. Giving a bx droid a different sniper wouldn't confused anyone as to what it was.

The phase 1 troopers can be mix matched pose wise, even the heavy weapons. But it's not an issue as it is clear which model has a z6.

I have 2 squads of 327th phase 2s that are a kitbash of 3 different boxes. The phase 2 z6 or if the box is kneeling. Mine are standing. It is not confusing at all as to what model has a z6 compared to a dc15a.

There would be no confusion in the OP's mod between an e5 and an e5s.

I wasn't actually addressing the OP's question, I agree they look close enough to be obvious, and should be fine for most casual play.

I was actually addressing your claim that Legion isn't WYSIYG. If it wasn't WYSIYG, then you wouldn't need to represent the sniper in any way, there is no need to represent what the model IS. The fact that all the sniper BX droids should be represented with similar looking models is part of WYSIWYG.
And for casual play, proxies don't matter so long as the opponent is completely aware, and agrees beforehand.

I'm a little confused. I was under the impression you're allowed to alter the model? Isn't that part of why they initiated the template system in OP? To free up players for customization of their sculpts as well as define LoS parameters for models that have taller or shorter models?

Taller and shorter is allowed, but what isn't is (for instance) putting Phase 2 heads on Phase 1s to use as Phase 1 units.
Heck, even an entirely wookiee army has been allowed at LVO, with the weapons still indicative of the units being represented, so the level of WYSIWYG tends to vary, but is still present.

Most opponents have no problem with conversions or stuff like this. Proxy models and just count as stand ins are a different matter as it often can lead to confusion. For Official FFG big tournaments then I doubt it will be fine but 9/10 it will be fine.
