Vonreg’s Pilot Ability (If I were the designer)

I love the TIE/ba chassis and I also love that they have both I5 and 6.... but Vonreg’s pilot ability is just..... waaaaaank.... whatever. I want something EXCITING! 😎 👍

My thought for a cool I6 pilot ability using deplete/strain interactions would be:

“When attacking or defending, if the enemy ship is in your (||) you may ignore the effects of being strained or depleted.”

I prefer I6 pilots to have weaker abilities as it balances their initiative.

Maybe the TIE/ba could get a pilot in a future pack that has that ability.

The TIE/ba having drawbacks is way more interesting than being able to... just, at init 6, ignore them

I get that but... look at Vader, Soontir, Fenn, Han, Wedge, somewhat Ani, Insect guy in CIS, somewhat Quickdraw...

They have KILLER abilities!

Vonreg's ability is about limiting his target's options and punishing them when they step over the limits his tokens set. Think, "Hey next turn for this ship a <insert red or white maneuver> is the best option, how about I just line up to pass them a token so that they get pounded when they do that maneuver".

It’s still a bit lackluster, and lots of Vonreg players basically forget it exists. He’s taken for his I6 and his ability is just okay if it works.

Unlike say Fenn whose ability defines him.

Not saying I don’t like him but his ability is a little unexciting

And Anakin and resistance Han don't, just like how there are pilots with stronger or weaker abilities at i5 and i4...

Vonreg is totally fine.

He's got a control ability which helps you next turn. Forcing an opponent to dial in a blue move or else be missing dice is pretty useful. I think it's interesting that there are some pilots with delayed effects like this.

Simply ignoring Deplete would be utterly BS. There'd be no reason for Vonreg to strain, just deplete to roll to get Bullseye, and you'll have a 3/3 statline pretty much without drawbacks. The trade-off a TIE/ba has to do between offense and defense is a really interesting design. I don't want him to just be red Kylo.

Vonreg is great as the #3 ace in a FO trip ace list

now if only they had a #2 ace...

Vonreg is already pretty interesting to fly. That pilot ability enables some nice things with Rivas to.

I get why players might not love it but there is a lot of fun to be had running Vonreg as is. Really has to be used well within the context of the rest of the list which is how it should be. One of the coolest new ships in 2.0 for me. I think FFG nailed it with the Tie Baron.

Woulda been better if it was like a jam token (helps with his Fined Tuned Thrusters deplete/strain without just ignoring it), since ships can just do a blue and his current ability means even less. Ships like interceptors, and fangs, and awings, all those other ships that stress themselves and do blues every round anyways don't really care. Jam may be too powerful, but increase his price a couple points to compensate.

Kylo is the one that really needs a new ability

Kylos ability is fine. Its not necessarily fun. But its absolutely fine on an already ridiculous ship.

On a more supportive note, might be interesting to think about what a new i1-i4 Tie Baron would look like. Seems like the ship could have a bunch of weird strain deplete related pilot abilities in those ranges.

If I were to rewrite Vonregs pilot ability it would probably involve some kind of “spend a shield and gain a deplete and strain to do something” type thing, but still be bad.

Sun Fac literally* doesn't have a pilot ability in hyperspace.

* Technically hp maul or dooku with tractor beam gives him one for 70 points.

Kylo's ability is pretty interesting in the θ-timeline where force is substantially weaker innately

Hrm. Jefferson or Burr, If I had to choose... I think I'd make the timing different. "After performing an attack, you may choose 1 enemy ship... etc etc..." That's a lot more immediate of a timing. It's got narrow direct benefit to Vonreg (but you can deplete someone about to attack you!), but the support of immediately tossing a Deplete on a ship, for Kylo or Blackout or Quickdraw to exploit is pretty big.

I don't want it at Init 6, heck maybe not even at Init 4, but text which lets you roll an extra attack die when strained , or an extra evade die when depleted , would be wicked cool. A normal TIE/ba gets to choose between being a 3/2/2/2 or a 2/3/2/2, this one would choose between 4/2/2/2 and 2/4/2/2. FO is my main faction atm and I am with you JB, you don’t get Vonreg for the ability. Saying that, I think the positive out of it is you can keep him cheap as an i6 ace, from a dev view point, because his ability isn’t OP. Kylo is in the same boat, the exception him being a force user spikes his points.
The thing I do like about these pilots are it’s a forced choice scenario, Kylo for example, if you’re only being shot at once, use a force to hand over a free panicked pilot. I think as stated earlier, it’s these kinds of abilities that can keep the price down.

Holo would still be better.

They DO, but some of the pilots with first eddition counterparts actually have weaker abilities than said counterparts (spend a force on Vader, Soontir has to do work to get the focus...Wedge is still Wedge).

I think Ani and Vonreg both have abilities that fall into the "sort of nice sometimes" category. Unlike Soontir, Sun Fac, and Vader, the ability doesn't really dictate how you fly them.
