Messin with Corran

By Skitch_, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I was reading the "How to fix the E-Wing" thread and got to thinking that I should experiment with Corran a bit more to see what I could come up with.

After thinking about what I wanted Corran to focus on I came up with this as a first iteration:

Corran Horn (66)
Predator (2)
Fire-Control System (2)
R3 Astromech (3)

Ship total: 73 Half Points: 37 Threshold: 3

Leia Organa (79)
Lando Calrissian (2)

Ship total: 81 Half Points: 41 Threshold: 7

Jake Farrell (36)
Crack Shot (1)
Proton Rockets (7)

Ship total: 44 Half Points: 22 Threshold: 2

Total: 198

My whole idea was that I want Corran to take 2 locks and keep those locks for the whole game, unless he has a really tasty range 1 bullseye with a focus opportunity and I want to finish a ship off to grab a lock on another target or two.

I wanted to keep Leia light because I wanted to keep her simple and saving her force for a Corran red maneuver. My thinking with Lando is to hopefully get a home run one turn. This may be too hopeful and taking him off for something else, or nothing, might be better.

And Jake is Jake with Prockets because I love Jake with Prockets and I wanted a three ship list. And Jake with Prockets gives them something else to think about. He has Crack Shot for after he fires his Prockets to maintain his punching power a bit.

I've only tested it in theory against the admittedly poor AI of fly casual. So far I've noticed that predator and fcs might be doubling up on something that I rarely need both for. I think I only used both in the se shot once or twice.

Thoughts?

Update: Trying to keep Leia semi-close to Corran to distribute a focus to Corran when he does a red is hard and, frankly, a lot of points for a support ship.

Overall, looks mostly fine. Decent enough list, and should scratch that Corran itch, without really being significantly worse than any sort of Fairly Trim Falcon + Expensive Ace + A-Wing (Jake or Arvel) list.

Certainly. The first reroll has by far more value than the 2nd, and it's usually a safe place to cut. I'd go Crack Shot (or maybe even the spicy Marksmanship?) given FCS/R3. Crack seems particularly good, since a large point of Corran is just to ram a lot of damage down someone's throat in a short period of time, and CS is going to help do that.

A few other stray thoughts, not necessarily better, just stuff to think about.

As to Lando crew... I just hate him. I hate him on every ship in every circumstance. His design is wicked cute and thematic and cool. I think running him is just bad. The chances of 2-tokens aren't that high, and the chance of getting the wrong token are large enough that I think it'd be better to just always Focus (like often Han wants to), or if you're interested in Evade actions bring the Millennium Falcon title (or Jyn in the right list, but with both partner ships having natural Evade actions, it's MF here). Personally, since Leia has the Force, I tend to think she'll mostly spend her actions Locking, Evading, or Boosting, and I'd rather invest in that than Lando.

Another possible tweak: while I love Leia Falcon, it'd be possible to run Lando pilot with Nien, if cutting Predator for Crack Shot. You'll have more potential for spreading the extra action around (Jake locks, then Lando sends over a Roll into Jake's ability to Focus... nice) and an pre-focus when Corran has a red move dialed in, but you'll be more vulnerable to blocks.

Swapping the Proton Rocket for an Engine Upgrade on Leia might also be nice, but if doing so, I'd cut crew/title from Leia to ensure Jake is Crack & Predator. Having more spike damage might be really nice, but there's a different benefit to having a more mobile Leia.

Awesome. The more I thought about it the more Lando crew seemed a bit unneeded since with that action I could just always do a focus and guarantee it. The old saying of a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush is particularly relevant here.

I will definitely be messing around with variations of this and trying some (all) of your suggestions specifically.

K2SO crew in the list gives Corran a calc aka basically a force, every round. A simple r4 astro gives him blue turns, or have Cassian Uwing in the list to just erase the stress from K2SO.

Corran Horn (66)
Predator (2)
Advanced Sensors (10)

Cassian Andor (51)
K-2SO (8)
Leia Organa (7)
Pivot Wing (0)

Norra Wexley (41)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Veteran Turret Gunner (10)
Total: 200

You guys are gonna regret waking up my feelings for Corran... 😂

I had a Corran list to try before covid arrived, but I haven’t played it yet. It looks very close to the OPs so you have my support. It has some regen with the insane chopper + elusive combo, which is SO much fun, though not too competitive. Here it goes:

(79) Leia Organa [Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter]
(3) Millennium Falcon
Points: 82

(66) Corran Horn [E-wing]
(2) "Chopper"
(10) Advanced Sensors
(3) Elusive
Points: 81

(36) Jake Farrell [RZ-1 A-wing]
Points: 36

Total points: 199

I never really liked the Chopper/Elusive combo... but add in Leia and it gets pretty sexy.

Yup. AS regen, sloop (or 1 hard) with Corran, gain focus, recharge elusive... sounds fun

I’ll be playing Corran today. Probably against Boba Fenn, so I expect no prisoners 😂 I’ll try and make a batrep tomorrow if I remember to take pics

I played 3 games (before points dropped) against Boba/Fenn, losing the first one by 12p, and winning the following two by a big margin. I only took pics from the 2nd game though:

In game 2 Boba had been destroyed the turn before, so Fenn had to kill 2 ships (Farrel was dead too). I was trying to block Fenn with Leia as she was badly hurt, and trying to kill him with Corran. Fenn decided to k turn to avoid the incoming block and was tokenless. Corran got lucky, (2 hits 2 crits), but Fenn just laughed at it and rolled 3 nattie evades, plus the concord down...

IMG_2352.jpg

Next turn Corran regen'd the lost shield, and got a focus thanks to Leia, who had bumped Fenn to avoid the rock and try to limit the mandalorian's movement options. Fenn BRd right to avoid Corran´'s bullseye and get to R3, but decided not to link to focus to "open his dial" the following turn (not too many options available anyway). Corran blanked, to compensate for the lucky roll the previous turn.

IMG_2353.jpg

Fenn had no good options apart from the 1 left turn so I settled for the block...

IMG_2354.jpg

I guessed right and Fenn bit the dust. Oh man I love Corran, and now he's 2p cheaper! Yay!

For the list overall... Corran down 2, Leia down 2. There's now potentially 5 points to play with.

Some options:

  • Spare Parts Canister on Corran. A charge that Chopper could steal for a shield, or maybe a clutch obstacle to ruin an opponent's day.
  • Agile Gunner on Leia. At 5 points, this actually might be a really nice action economy card. It'll allow a turret to be a lot more flexible with how they dial in moves.
  • Swap Millennium Falcon for Engine Upgrade. Boosting large-base turrets is pretty nice, and freeing up Leia's dial is nice. Evades aren't bad, though...
  • Talents (or missiles?) for Jake. Crack Shot was nerfed, but still probably OK. Predator is same as it ever was. Marksmanship doesn't feel invalid now, and might be nice on a follow-up ship like Jake.
    • I know Jake is often a Focus guy, but maybe Ion Missiles could be nice. For only 3 points, you can really increase your chances of doing damage to a 3-agility ship, if Jake gets left more alone. I'd rather have the longer-range option than going with Clusters.
  • Sense on Leia. Information can be useful with everyone's mobility and non-6 Initiatives here.
  • Bid. 5 points is kind of awkward to me here. Topping out at Init 5, I'd probably want a smaller bid (2-3), or vastly bigger (10+).

Thanks for the input! I hadn’t considered all those options as I had already settled on Sense. It’s really helpful against those 6s and 5s that move after my ships, and I agree completely, 5p of bid won’t help me as much as Sense in those matchups. I like spare parts though. I used them to great effect in the 2 System Opens I made the cut with my Han Corran list, and I’ll probably test them here too.

How much did you find yourself Evading on Leia? I keep being tempted by Engine Upgrade...

If I’m not mistaken, in the first engagement in all 3 games, and maybe one or twice if I was winning and running to preserve points. Only 3 games on my belt though so I can’t really tell...

I guess Falcon Blues aren't that bad, and Leia can probably handle a white move while stressed, so it's probably best to just sweat it out with a red boost... I'd just love to have those white boosts. :P

Going by the OP list... I cooked up this, because I like Leia with more than 1 Force.

  1. Leia Organa: Kanan Jarrus, Jyn Erso
  2. Corran Horn; R3 Astro, FCS
  3. Jake Farrell: Predator

You open up Jake for Roll/Boost > Evade as well as let Leia give out Evade tokens instead of Focus. I don't hate the Falcon Title on Leia, but I rarely find myself using it. With 1 Agility, its not too powerful. Although with an Evade and Force, Leia is quite the tanky one. If you want, you can grab "Chopper" and Eluive instead of the R3 Astro for a 200/200 list.

Falcon Blues are quite decent, so Boosting with Stress is okay for me at least. One thing I would love to fit into the list would be Agile Gunner, but one cannot have everything.
