first attempt at a couple Single Set v1.0 (AKA -

By f7eleven, in Warhammer Invasion Deck Building

Ok, you have to read Clamatius' post in the main forum first to get the rules for the format.

Here are my first two Seattle decks:

Dwarves

3 Innovation
3 Warpstone Excavation
3 Contested Village
3 Defender of the Hold
2 Grudge Thrower
2 Lure Them Out
3 Mountain Legion
1 Stand Your Ground
1 Burn it Down
1 Demolition!
1 Dwarf Cannon Crew
1 Errant Wolf
1 Great Book of Grudges
3 Keystone Forge
1 Master Rune of Valaya
1 Mountain Barracks
2 Slayers of Karak Kadrin
1 Durgnar the Bold
2 Dwarf Ranger
3 Troll Slayers
1 Zealot Hunter
1 Zhufbar Engineers
3 Dragonslayer
3 Longbeards
2 Mountain Brigade
1 King Kazador
1 Reap What's Sown

Chaos

1 Cloud of Flies
1 Fledgling Chaos Spawn
3 Innovation
2 Seduced by Darkness
3 Warpstone Excavation
1 Wolves of the North
2 Ancient Map
3 Contested Village
3 Servants of Khorne
2 Armoury
3 Berserk Fury
1 Brutal Offering
1 Clan Moulder's Elite
1 Daemonsword
3 Festering Nurglings
2 Shrine to Nurgle
1 Nurgle's Pestilence
3 Savage Marauders
2 Treasure Vaults
3 Bloodsworn
2 Maledictor of Tzeentch
2 Tzeentch's Firestorm
3 Great Unclean One
1 Bloodthirster
1 Flames of Tzeentch

Neither is overwhelmingly original, but they both look fun as hell to play (to me at least).

Ancient Map is an interesting idea to get the singleton Wolves, but I don't think it works without at least 1 more playable quest - the Maps are totally dead draws if you have the Wolves on the table. I'm going to try the Contested Stronghold route for Chaos - there's significantly less support destruction in the SS format.

Don't forget that Orc rush and Orc/Skaven rush is still pretty strong in Single Set. It's more beatable because they only have 1 Pillage for early disruption, though. I'd be tempted to get another Brutal Offering into the Chaos list to fight the rush, and maybe Bule or Chaos Knights instead of some of the Great Unclean Ones to cut the curve down. I've got a Chaos deck but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I reckon Dwarves are going to be pretty good. Your list is pretty similar to mine, although I think you want a Blessing of Valaya or two and a Zealot to give you outs against the Deathmaster.

This format is *sweet* so much more varirety than standard.

Heres my Orc/DE/Skaven list that is "tearing it up" right now. Its basically a midrange/rock deck - as much good stuff, removal, disruption, and pressure as I can pack into one list.

30 Units

  • 3 Spider Rider
  • 3 Snotling Pump Wagon
3 Squig Herders 3 Followers of Mork 3 Lobber Crew 3 Clan Rats 1 Clan Moulder's Elite 1 Greyseer Thanquol 1 Deathmaster Snkitch 1 Poison Wind Globadiers 1 Rat Ogres 3 Shades 1 Vile Sorceress 1 Boar Boyz 1 Ironclaw's Horde 1 Ugrok Beardburna

13 Supports

  • 2 Har Ganeth
  • 3 Contested Village
  • 3 Warpstone Excavation
  • 1 Orc/Dark Elf Alliance
  • 1 Chaos/Dark Elf Alliance
  • 1 Orc/Chaos Alliance
  • 2 Choppa

7 Tactics

  • 3 Innovation
  • 1 Troll Vomit
  • 1 Pillage
  • 2 We'z Bigga

Deathmaster may need to go (he is just ridiculously unfair in this format) but otherwise this is just a ton of fun. You get to actually play with guys like Ugrok... draws are *just* slow enough that there is real room for play mistakes and interaction with your opponent. 4 cost and above cards no longer need to be game-breaking to be playable - the Rat Ogres/Clan Rats engine has consistently been a top performer in this list.

Seriously a breath of fresh air, I strongly recommend this format to those of you tired of rush Skaven mirrors, bolt throwers, and other such nonsense.

I see that every one is making only 50 card deck so I'm not the only one. :) After a lot of play especialy with bigger (80 cards) decks I must say - don't do it. I got a lot of cards and a big problem when I need a special one. So from now on I play only with 50 and 60 cards decks. Those are small, fast, dangerous to the opponent and fun for me.

And one more thing - most of my decks have only a couple (6 max) neutral cards. I don't know if it's good but it works well.

ffgfan: there are a bunch of very strong neutral cards - setting an artificial limit just for the sake of it doesn't seem like a good idea. Warpstone Excavation, Contested Village and Innovation should be 3x in every deck in my opinion (standard or Single Set), which is 9 before you even talk about Skaven.

In Single Set, Contested Stronghold seems significantly better than in standard since support removal is weaker (all the normal strong support removal like pillage is 1x).

ddm5182's Orc/DE single set is pretty solid. I'm not 100% sure of the best way to beat it, honestly. Dwarves are ok but they really suffer compared with standard with only having 1x Stand Your Ground and 2x Mountain Brigade and Slayers of Karak Kadrin, which are the backbone of the deck. Mining Tunnels should give them a nice boost - we'll see how that plays out.

3 Warpstone Excavation
3 Contested Village
3 Keystone Forge
1 Mountain Barracks
1 Dwarf/Empire Alliance
11 hammer supports

3 Innovation
2 Helblaster Volley Gun
2 Lure Them Out
1 Stand Your Ground
2 Blessing of Valaya
1 Burn it Down
1 Demolition!
1 Great Book of Grudges
1 Master Rune of Valaya
1 Judgement of Verena
15 tactics/attachments

2 Defender of the Hold
2 Mountain Legion
1 Dwarf Cannon Crew
1 Dwarf Miner
2 Hammerer of Karak Azul
2 Slayers of Karak Kadrin
1 Durgnar the Bold
2 Dwarf Ranger
3 Troll Slayers
1 Zealot Hunter
1 Dragonslayer
3 Longbeards
2 Mountain Brigade
1 Ironbreakers of Ankhor
24 units

This is where I'm at with the Dwarves right now. Alright, some notes.

Helblaster Volley Gun seems pretty good here given that you want 2 devs in the battlefield anyway for the Troll Slayers. I'm considering going up to 3x.

I had more Dragonslayers, Defenders of the Hold and Mountain Legion but I cut them back after getting rocked repeatedly by Vile Sorceress and Har Ganeth.

The Ironbreakers are occasionally decent but I don't think they are worth 5. They'll probably come out once I figure out what to run in that spot. I want another Brigade, basically, but I don't have anything good left at the 4 slot except more Dragonslayers. Maybe Gurni if I go to 3x Helblaster, although he seems pretty bad - by default he is a chaos knight with 1 less hammer, which is weak.

I am not excited about having to run Hammerers or Dwarf Miner - they are not very good. However, I need more cheap units to deal with Lobber Crews so the actual threats like the Brigade don't just fold. That's what the Defenders of the Hold and Mountain Legions are there for too really, but an early Har Ganeth is just a beating if you have too many 1hp guys.

Durgnar has seemed to be more effective in Single Set than he was in standard - I think it's because the games are bit slower and often close, so his +2 power ability often kicks in.
