New kit and new format

By Mighty, in X-Wing

Care to explain for those of use that cannot view YouTube at work?

Each generic has a table on the backside of the card, see below for an example.

Hoping this means narrative or campaign style play with quick builds.

Yeah solo play needs some sort of progression.

I read the text above as

Quote

Destroy ships to earn experience. When an enemy ship is destroyed and your ship has dealt at least 1 damage to it, check the top most box in the area below. Once your ship has checked a sufficient amount of boxes it gains the ability listed next to that box.

That suggests an "instant" upgrade sort of thing. Maybe just a simple mechanic within a single quick-build game. There are just a lot of boxes there for a single quick-build game which very much supports your idea.

@Frimmel I think there is a campaign component I mean how often will a baron of the empire deal 5 damage to different ships that are destroyed in a single game. Unless your doing a faction aces high variant with generics or a huge epic game it would be extremely unlikely.

I'd almost seems to need to be an Aces High style game, as the TIE Defender loses 3 shields at level 4. Basically, a late game punishment for taking a chassis that is very strong an the start.

It's good to see that FFG's ability to typo hasn't dulled with the lockdown. The wording on the Partisan Renegade has me confused as well; does it mean that it always reduces it's attack by one, or just when the wings are closed?

Yeah with that card it makes more sense

It's gotta be some sort of progressive format. Hopefully a campaign with enemy ships controlled by AI.

I wonder if this means they will finally also release quick builds for the new pilots as well.

It would have been really cool if they made branching path options for these generics so they could eventually be a bit unique later in the format.

I doubt this is for an ongoing campaign, as a lot of the experience rewards only make sense in the middle of a game. Seems more likely to be some kind of Aces High format which will be run at events.

How do you suppose they will get the cards out??

I imagine they will announce this at their In-Flight report. Remember, these cards are promo/awarded cards. They will most likely release regular ones that don't have the full art in some sort of pack.

So like in a Hotshots and Aces style pack?

I would assume so. I think it would make most sense if they did separate faction packs.

These seem like promo cards, but I would expect its a draft of a campaign expansion.

I wouldn't take these too seriously. These are an easy way to offer players some options in store events like leagues, etc. I will be very surprised to see them get a wider release in a card pack.

They are talking about the concept of cards with built in leveling ranks.

the promos themselves won’t be in the packs.

We were using this kit before lock down occurred.

  • There is no narrative stuff
  • there is no solo play
  • it is very similar to Aces High format, with tweaks
  • your pilot gets experience and improves... until he dies and you respawn
  • when time is called, you count points
  • it’s multi-week, each week is a different set of ships to choose from

It is a nice break from standard play, and looking forward to finishing it off, but it’s just a fluffy casual kit to break things up.

IMO This format is for a tournament, Aces High Style.

Getting experience instead of victory tokens, or spend victory tokens for experience as the tournament progresses.

If FFG wanted that people play with it casually, they would release somthing apart, not including it in a tournanment package.

No, it’s for three weeks of play. And yes, there is an accumulated total at the end for a grand prize, but each week can have its own winners. We did week one, TIE Interceptors, TIE/ba, Fireball, and YV-666.

I've read the rules card that comes with the kit. I’m the one running the event at the local shop.

You could run it as a single day tournament if you wanted...

As I correctly understand, it's a standalone event, that can happen during a one-day or during a few days span.

As I have guessed, those things are something special that are out of the normal play of 200-pts games. They are not special rewards for the tournament winners.

Correct.

Perhaps I triggered unfairly on your wording in the first post... "tournament" is certainly not a good description. "Event" is. The ship choices don’t exactly lend to a fair battlefield for competitive tournament play. Second round included TIE Defenders and generic U-wings... there were a couple of other ships in the mix, but everybody looked at the Defenders with hungry expressions so I’m certainly doing the same to keep up in the arms race.

Correct.

Take home the card of the ship you played (participation) I think it was something like 8 copies of each? Higher? There were a lot of cards in the bundle. We didn’t have a huge turnout. Top scoring player for the night went home with acrylic tokens. Top scoring when all rounds gets the acrylic Ember/Fireball card.

Wonder if the store lost the score sheet by now...

That is the main reason I would prefer that these events happens in one day/evening.

Much less problems keeping track, and if someone is not available next time, they may not be there for the finale, ...
