Rocket Boots

By Janaka, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Some cards raise a hero's maximum hit points. Let's take for example Ironman's Rocket Boots which says "You get +1 hit point". As it enters play the card raises his maximum hit point value by 1, but do I add +1 to his health too as the card enters play?

You add 1 to your current health as well, not just raise the maximum. Same with other cards that add +X health.

Yeah, that's how I've always played it. But yesterday made me question it because I was forced to discard an upgrade in play. I discarded Rocket Boots. I then used Stark Tower to retrieve Rocket Boots and it suddenly felt a little gamey to gain health this way - in hindsight I should have discarded his Mark V Armour for +6 hit points 😉

When you discard Rocket Boots (or any other +X hit points card) you do the opposite, so in this case you subtract 1 from your current health as well as lower your maximum. This can defeat you if it causes your health to drop to zero.

I just add damage to the heroes till they hit their threshold (Which raises with boosts like Rocket Boots). That just made more sense to me.

I didn't see anything in the rules to suggest you receive damage when discarding an upgrade like Rocket Boots. Discarding Rocket Boots brings your maximum hit point threshold down, but surely this isn't the same as receiving damage to your current health? Unless of course you're at maximum health when you discard it, and have to lower your hit points accordingly in line with the lowered threshold.

It is under the "Gets" section of the rules reference.

It is the second bullet point under “Gets” in the Rules Reference (emphasis mine):

Quote

If such an ability causes a character to get hit points, it modifies the character’s remaining hit points while the ability remains active , and also modifies the character’s maximum hit points while the ability remains active.

I hope that helps.

Okay. Thanks for clarifying.
