Celebrating Star Wars Parenting on Father's Day

By Admiral Calkins, in Star Wars: Armada

Happy Father's Day to all the Dads out there! Given that my daughters are slowly taking an interest in Star Wars, I wanted to see if anyone out there has gotten their children into Star Wars gaming (my six-year old calls Armada "Daddy playing with his starships" while my four-year old calls my Legion Separatist Army, particularly my B1 Battle Droids, Dad's "dumb robot guys").

Note: She is definitely using a GR-75 Combat Retrofit in the picture.

Note: The first thing I taught her is that, above all else, you must prevent the antenna and cannon from breaking off on your Victory.

Do any Dads out there have any good stories or pictures about getting their little ones into Armada or other Star Wars games, or even about just being a fun Star Wars parent in general (Moms too, as I didn't post on Mother's Day)?

I had a good game with my 11y/o son the other day. We’ve tried a few times in the past, but they usually got bored after a while.

My three oldest have all “helped” paint some TIE fighters and some rebel troopers for Legion, as well.

My 11 month old daughter loves Armada. When she was 4 months she had the biggest smile as we listened to Karneck explain Engine Techs on SWAE. Now she's very interested in the toolbox holding my ships, and crawls toward Vassal games. I can't wait until she can actually play the game (it'll be a few years...).

I've got 2 boys, ages 6 and 8. I've gotten them to play Armada twice, although neither time have we finished a game. But when all they need to do is set a course by adjusting the maneuver dial, then roll dice accordingly, that helps them enjoy the game more. Next time I'll try to add a commander and maybe some re-roll style upgrades. But too many fiddly bits would probably be overwhelming.

I did get my oldest play a full game of Armada at the beginning of quarantine. It helps that he is a good reader, even if he doesn't understand some of the words on the cards. I played the rebels and he played the empire. I won, despite my best efforts to the contrary. But it was a close game. I'm hoping to get him to play again soon, but my 2 year daughter easily distracts him by grabbing his toys.

Future admirals are in the making.

My nine-year-old is a bit of a freak. He’s been playing Armada for over two years, loves to design fleets - and played one of the fleets in our recent eight person rebellion in the rim campaign.

The same campaign featured a 60+ aged military logistician, who came to respect the Ewok commander for his unorthodox effectiveness (and predictably ridiculous die rolls). Nobody else wants to play against him when we choose matchups, because he is a reasonable match for someone with just a few games under their belt, and it’s extra humiliating to lose to someone who needs a booster box to reach much of the table.

He primarily plays rebel MSU, and has a strong preference for a-wings. I just wish I could get him this excited about normal nine-year-old things (aside from Pokémon).

My son is now almost 16 but has been playing x-wing and armada with me and others in the local scene for close to 5 years now. He owns most of our imp collection while I own the rebs. Playing far too often thanks to 'rona.

One downside of only having fur and scale babies...they can't play Armada with me. Fortunately my wife does!

My son is 9, and for his up and coming 10th birthday, he wants a core set, and a MC80. We had a game on Father's Day, my triple Nebs and MC75 + support vs a double ISD, Raider, Gozanti and Tie list (my 401 vs his 450). Great game. I got some photos and might make a bat rep if I can remember it all and have time.

My daughter would rather watch a movie. Sigh.

Give it time. My oldest daughter didn't care for Star Wars movies or television until she got introduced to Ashoka. Then she couldn't get enough of Star Wars... as long as she was in it.
