Lothal inspired table build (Self designed 3d prints) UPDATE: Table complete!

By Tvayumat, in Terrain Building

So, Rebels is my favorite Star Wars property in a good long while, with Lothal being (in my opinion) a wonderfully developed setting rife with opportunities for clashes during the Galactic Civil War. I've started by creating the basic modular shacks and the extremely common "house" seen throughout the series in various places. Right to business, here is my board thus far...

The crates, vaporators, and rock mounds were files purchased or found from other sources but they just don't quite "fit" the rest of the Rebels look, so I've set about replacing certain pieces and adding others.

Drawing inspiration from the farms seen in Season One, I've started a barn and modular wall system to create similar layouts.

Looks like I'm going all in on Lothal, so I've started some upgrades to make my Imps look the part of the occupation as well...

UPDATE! Completed the table at long last. More pictures in newest post and in imgur link.

Fantastic work so far. The panels on the troop transport will be hinged or magnetized, I assume?

What 3D Printer are you using? I'm looking to get one, mostly for making gaming terrain, and I'm looking for recommendations.

I use a Creality Ender 3 (basic edition) that I picked up for $180 on sale for all my FDM printing (Terrain, bases, larger figures) and an Elegoo Mars for my resin printing needs (fine detail figures).

If you're looking for mostly terrain you can't go wrong with the Ender 3 as a starting point. It takes a bit of tinkering but it's a great machine to learn on, and by the time you want to upgrade to something bigger it will have paid for itself a few times over.

Thanks. I've been looking at the Ender 5 Pro a lot, and thinking I might go that route. I've heard lots of good things about the Ender series, and the version I'm looking at comes with a few upgrades already packaged into it.

I don't think you'd go wrong with the Ender 5 Pro.

I personally soon plan to upgrade to the Ender 5 Plus though it is a very different machine to the pro.

Yesssss Tvayumat!!!! Your Lothal Board! is superb!!!...also I like a lot Rebels!! Where can find/buy your buildings files??? the big Arch from Morad Sumar's farm...must be superb too..... ๐Ÿ™‚ hehehe

More progress. I didn't mean to ACTUALLY recreate Morad Sumar's farm, but it's a great piece of inspiration and just sort of fell into place.

Thank you!

As long as my printing goes smoothly it should be available soon.

So far the fences, the buildings, and the vaporators are all complete. Need to finish the barn and a few sundry scatter bits as well as the arch.

Looking really great.

I love it. Now i want to go back and rewatch those episodes

really nice!!!

Which software are you using for editing your models?

Blender?

Tvayumat great job again!!!

This is comnning better and better .....can't wait what is comming next!!

Looks the part alright. Well done

Running off the last few vaporators on the printer now. All the walls and fences, one of the houses, and both of the shacks are painted. Just need to finish the barn, the bubble house and the last of the vaporators!

Wow, it looks fantastic! I'm curious why you went with the slide-lock fitting on the wall sections instead of, say, magnets?

At any rate, it all looks fantastic! The fence looks so good, I thought you had printed the uprights and run aluminum or brass rod through it to simulate the bars. Well done, sir!

Thanks for the kind words!

Magnets are fun, and all, but these print in place and require no additional purchases or work. I also live in a cold climate where super-glued magnets will often pop out of place in the winter.

That was my original plan, but similar to the magnet debacle I didn't want to have to buy extra materials so I decided to try making built in supports and they worked. The fence bars are shockingly tough to break, too. You can strum it like a guitar.

I'd like to second this question. While I love printing models I buy from Imperial Terrain and other designers, or use files from Thingiverse, I want to start learning 3d modeling so I can create my own objects to print, but I'm not sure what software to get started with.

I use a mixture of Fusion 360, Zbrush, and Meshmixer most of the time, depending on what I'm doing.

For free options I can recommend getting started with Tinkercad and Blender. For absolute total beginners or people just looking to do some simple editing to pre-existing stls, try out the microsoft windows utility "3d builder". It is shockingly useful for how simple it is.

Blender has a bit of a learning curve, but if you put in the time and the online tutorials there is very little it can't do!

Thanks. I'm downloading Blender now. I did a LITTLE bit of 3d modeling in college (just making simple shapes and modifying them), but for the most part I'm going to be starting from scratch. I'm a graphic designer by profession, so I'm used to working in creative software tools, so by using tutorials and trial and error, I think I'll be able to wrap my head around it and at least get started.

Again, your Lothal stuff looks GREAT, especially those recent photos of some painted items.

Been working with Tinkercad mainly (sometimes with meshmixer and sculptris)

I think for beginning terrain or vehicles design it works fairly well

For me Blender is maybe too powerfull, and the interface looks really complicated for starting

Anybody knows if Zbrushcore would be sufficient for terrain design?

Congrats man, looks gorgeous.

Looking good.

That's really, really nice. How do you find it in play?
