So the first post here where i laid it required further refinement?

My rule of thumb is a session is what I write out to be a session in my notes. Often my players take longer than the time we set aside a week to play to get through what I write, so usually they will get xp when we reach the end of what I wrote for that time.

Having said that, if it takes longer because the players were following a lead I didn't anticipate or spend longer in rp etc, then I'll add some extra rp on top of what I had planned.
