Make Sato Great... Again?

By thestag, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

I don't know if there is a great list with Sato (at least using the 400 pt. tournament rules). I think I need another ship in this list, maybe 2 transports to push squad commands, or a CR-90 to move Sato to. Any critiques welcome. Thanks!

This is my opinion. I don't think for Sato that your MC30's have the correct setup. They only have two Reds, so change that to black for long range. If the enemy ship has an evade, then you've already lost one dice. I'd swap Ex Racks for APT's, so if a Crit goes through, is a face up damage card at long range. I wouldn't use Advance Projectors either. I'd use this for a MC30 personally: -

MC30c Scout Frigate (69)
• Intel Officer (7)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Assault Proton Torpedoes (5)
= 85 Points

Add any titles as you see fit. There is the possibility of putting Spinals on for two long range blacks from the front as well as the sides, with the possibility of APT's triggering but this is getting too expensive in my opinion. Into Officer is to cover the evade if a ship has them.

Although I've not used Malee, getting this special effect to happen loses you one of your two long range dice if you don't roll a Crit/hit. I'd ditch this and get Tycho, and use the points to upgrade your ex racks to APT's. I'd prefer another A Wing as well for the range, whether it be Shara or a generic.

I don't think Yavaris is the best title either for your Neb. If you are going to have one, then it's Salvation to double up your Crits (which will pop up more on your black dice).

I'd get rid of BCC/Expanded hangar as well, you need Sqns to proc Sato, and to glue up enemy squadrons so I'd change them to something else.

You are correct in that you need another ship.

Thanks for the feedback @Herr Style I made some changes while also going in a bit of a different direction. I think 1 more fighter might be nice, but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

AF2A, I've used this build with good results. QBTs and Paragon make it very nasty. Could drop to an AF2B for points.

MC30s are ok but you need more squadrons. 70-100 points is the sweet spot for Sato. Less than this and your fighters can be wiped out leaving Sato's shooting bonus unused. More than this and you don't really have the gun firepower to make efficient use of Sato shots. Drop Intel officers or swap them to SFOs.

Flotillas, drop one for squadrons, could convert the other to the combat version as a CF command giving 2 black dice can sting.

Squadrons, always take Tycho. Generic HWKs are good and A-Wings hanging around on asteroids until needed. Then look at cheap rogue squadron, lancers or YT2400s.

Missions can really bite you. Fighter ambush and superior positions are pure 134 point bomber missions and a fleet with this many squadrons will savage you. Precision strike can do this too but maybe not as bad. Most wanted, planet ion cannon and solar corona are safe bets

Thanks @Mad Cat Good ideas, but a couple of items I don't necessary agree with:

I don't see my flying my AF2 slow enough to get use out of QBT's and I find Paragon easier to get use out of with Local Fire Control, otherwise you need that double arc to get any use out of it. Pair that with Walex and you can Salvo many times in a game. I did drop it down to a AF2B, that's a good idea.

I had a bomber heavy build at first, but paired it back, obviously too far. I didn't update my objectives. Although objectives are merely a formality, I rarely win the bid war or we play with no objectives.

I'm not sure about dropping Intel Officers, they are a bit pricey, but like @Herr Style pointed out, evades will eat up my 2 dice. Paired with Nym, that's a lot of potential for defense token discarding. But I can't afford Nym.

I feel this list is looking pretty nice.

I’d remove everything off of your Nebulons and put on QBT, and possibly Salvation title on one? Then with the points saved get a GR75 and put Leia on that. She needs to be on a command 1 ship. Maybe then juggle your Squadrons around so you get enough spare then to add a slaved turret Hammer Head Scout or a HH Torp?

There’s an old saying in Armada: “Focus on playing to a ship’s strengths, not shoring up its weaknesses.” There are exceptions, of course, but Nebulon-B Frigates have all their guns up front for a reason: you never want to let the enemy see those weak broadside zones. Letting you opponent take a rip at them with 3+ dice is probably going to devastate your frigate, possibly destroying it before you can even use those big expensive Enhanced Armaments. Even under optimal circumstances, Neb-B’s are fairly fragile. Making them the backbone of the fleet is challenging.

That said, using 1-2 of them in a Sato fleet is possible. Salvation is particularly strong in a Sato fleet, Vanguard can be built for a little survivability, and with the correct fighter mix, Yavaris is decent with Sato as well. Sadly, Redemption is too expensive in a fleet that’s as points-hungry as a Sato list usually is.

Auxiliary Shield Teams and some early Engineering commands are recommended on your Neb-B’s, to give them just a bit more survivability (a rare exception to the “don’t bother shoring up weaknesses” rule). Expert Shield Techs can make them a bit tougher as well, and there’s definitely an argument to be made for Spinal Armament, but perhaps it’s better to keep them cheap in a Sato list.

I've always liked Sato too, so here's a Pheonix Squardon thematic build. I have yet to try it out, so I' can't say if its any good, but as an MSU list it looks fun.
Made an edit to replace Shara with Kanan who I'd forgotten!
