The Stereotype Holds Up...

By oreet, in Star Wars: Legion

So over the weekend, I played my first 2 games of Legion. We had a lot of fun. Saturday we did a 3'x3' starter box Rebels vs Imperials, and Sunday we did a 6' x 3' 800 point Rebel vs. Imperial

It seems the stereotype of the Stormtrooper's aim holds up. In the 800 point game, I had 1 5-model squad of Stormtroopers on the table, and in round 1, and round 2, my attack rolls were all blank white dice. I even used an aim in Round 2, and after the rerolls, I was still staring at a lot of blank white dice...

(I bought this shirt after experiencing the burn of white dice in this game lol)

The good news is this.

Dice work on averages, so while white dice seem really crummy in small data samples over time they should average out. Some games you'll roll really hot with white dice. (In the last month I have seen multiple clone Z6 troopers roll 3+ crits with no rerolls) Same goes for the white defense dice. They may seem useless, but they do average out. (My dekkas just yesterday rolled 5/6 defensive surge/block results multiple times in a row, they were functionally immortal lol) And in other games your white dice will do almost nothing.

My advice is invest in good terrain. Get pieces that provide varying levels of cover and most importantly pieces that block line of sight completely.

Just wait until you're doing full blown grand army battles! (So much fun)

For now, most of my terrain is either barricades from the starter box or random board game boxes i grabbed off a shelf. eventually i'm going to do more terrain wise. I've been thinking about getting a 3d Printer for a long time, so this game might finally be what gets me to do that. Between designing my own, and buying/downloading other peoples' designs, the possibilities are endless.

Terrain can be tricky. I was quick to jump the gun on a set of 3d printed pieces that I liked the look of but are terrible for competitive play because it's almost impossible to block LoS. Now I'm starting to watch tutorials on YouTube to make my own. I'm working on Geonosis stuff now but it's slow pacing because of all the painting I have to do. lol

You just need to buy more dice.

I have bought probably 7-8 core sets and now my white dice only blank out sometimes 😋 instead of all the time

Play Rebels, their defense dice usually do the same thing

Precisely why Imps love heavy weaps and grenades XD

On one of the last games I could play (a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away thanks to covid) I had 3 units of B1s with a heavy weapon and 1 extra unit of them without upgrades. I didn't expect much from them, their main purpose was to be a cheap unit to hold objectives, but when they got the chance to shoot at an enemy unit, they rolled 4 crits, 1 hit and 1 blank (without even aiming). From then on they became my man attack force... until 2 rounds later when they came back to normal and rolled all blanks 🙂

Don't you know, that's what surges hit with non-surge units. :D

Add heavy weapons and use aim, you will get alot more hits

@oreet This is good advice.

I'd go further and say subtract the extra stormtrooper personnel upgrade and add a DLT19 heavy weapon instead.

It's 13 points more per unit, but throwing a couple of red dice in the attack pool and having a range 4 option (with impact) is nice for stormies. I don't think I've ever been able to justify the extra trooper upgrade for stormies. 11points is just too much for so little return.

At least you get another mini that rolls red DEF dice. You want a real waste, pay 10pts for a standard reb and watch it go up in smoke. :P

Technically though, the storm trooper with red dice and no surge only has one extra chance to block over the rebel trooper with white dice and a surge to block lol Why is it that white dice feel so much weaker? lol

I mean, 50% of the time beats 33% of the time, every time.

Heck, the stormies get the better deal even when you put the two probabilities together between both attack and defense (38% of the time, white attack dice will roll hit/crit/surge vs hit/crit on black dice 50%). On average, without modification, Stormtroopers roll favorably roughly 44% of the time while Rebel Troopers only do so about 41.5% of the time. But, then again, they are 44 points vs 40 points, so therein lies the difference I guess (assuming Precise 1 and nimble have equal value).
