Weird newbie question.

By Delinquent Panda, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

I'm in my first star wars game and enjoying it quite a lot though as a player I try to be rules competent so I don't waste time asking questions constantly. Session before last I finally get Parry and use it for the first time last session. I activate it and explain quickly how I think it works (Only purchased once so get three strain stop 3 damage) And he's like no, you only stop two damage because you have to buy it a second time to be considered to have 'ranks' in the talent and implied that's how all ranked talents worked. Is there a rules section that I missed or or is he completely off?

Is there anything in the book that definitively says one way or the other?

He is incorrect, you are right. The first talent you purchase is your first rank of the talent.

If the second talent you purchase of a type is your first rank, that would mean that you have to purchase two ranks of Gearhead before you can remove a Setback or two ranks of Physical Training before you get to add a Boost.

Yep, your GM is wrong.

When buying a ranked Talent, the first time you buy it its Rank 1, second time Rank 2 and so on.

Just talk with him about it, if you need a rules reference see Page 128 EoE Core, 136 FaD Core or 140 AoR Core under Talent Ranks and Purchasing the same Talent multiple times is says "When a character learns a talent for the second - or later - time, he gains an additional rank in the talent".

That's rather clear in my opinion.

Have them GM take a look at some adversary stat blocks that have ranked talents. That should clear things up.

Thanks for the reply and advice. The thread took a while to get through the filters so things resolved before you actually answered. The GM did change his mind in the end, though it was more 'all the players are really adamant it works this way maybe I should just go with it' instead of actually changing his stance, but I'll take it!
