calculating threat per mission

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into this topic.

I've been messing around with mission design, but the first couple attempts I was off the mark regarding mission-prompt-challenges.

So is there some heuristics with regards to how much threat's worth of crap you should throw at the players?

And on that same note: is there a good measure for how to figure how long the mission should be (at least enough to get a decent guess prior to play testing)
