Rebel Snow Job

By allistorpreist, in Army Building

After some thinking and despite getting a lot of troops for them on the cheap, I decided I am really not an imperial player and likely will use them just to draw in new players. So I am going a little more all-in on rebels with a small side of Seperatists because Christopher Lee is what awesome wants to be when it grows up.

My initial Rebels were Sabine based, but aside from a second landspeeder, cause I have ideas, and more fleet troops, I don't need anything until clan wren ships. So it seems like it is time to build a Hoth based force. Based on that, and little experience outside of my usual setups:

Which commanders do you like with the veterans? I am thinking it may be time for Han and Chewie, but I am curious to hear peoples thoughts.

How often do you use the 1.4 FD Laser Cannon and how do you use it? It looks cool so I am getting one, but I have no idea what to do with it. Kinda like the landspeeder, which I aim to get 2 of so...

And finally, how do rebels work without commando spam or tauntauns? I am not saying I won't use either, I will, but part of the plan is to move away from the meta and explore other corners of the rebels. So what other (ideally hoth based) tricks do people use? Just brainstorming, there are no bad ideas.

For ahoth based army you have FD turrets, which I wouldn't take more than 1 , but it can be a good board presence on the new objectives/deployments, cassian is actually quite a good figure if you want a hot paint scheme. Rebel Veterans may not be top tier but they aren't that bad if you know how to play them (they can also fees orders to the FD turret), again I don't think I'd take more than 1.

What does a Sabine based rebel army look like?

Any of the Rebel units can be painted in a hoth themed pattern. Or you could paint them all alpine themed.

Cassian comes with Han Solo's Hoth jacket already.

All the rebels have jackets, with a little conversion any of the hoth guys coyld be converted into Luke Skywalker.

AtRts are fun. I've played 2 FD laser cannons but they die easily once they come into fire and they are very static whichisnt fun for me

Basically Sabine, with Leia or Jyn until they give me a Hera. I use basic Rebels and fleet troops, but I am aiming to get more fleet troops since they show up in the TV show more. I use AT-RTs, painted with some Sabine flair, and Commando Strike Teams with demo charges. I have a speeder painted in a sabine-ish style, but I just got a second and I am printing Mandolorian bits to make a clan wren speeder. The composition of her list will likely look different when my Clan Wrenn finally ships.

In most themes there is some flexibility, nature of the game, but I want them as hoth as I can get, and I want to fly a snow speeder cause they are cool 😄

Since I am going all in on rebels, I am thinking of an original trillogy all start list with Luke, Leia, Han and Chewy, probably with rebel Troopers and fleets. May not be the best idea, but it is not like I play for money right?

I'd love to see the speeder. I love conversions, that's what I like to do with each squad and the rebels have the best guys to do it with.

Han and Chewie are actually pretty good together and Luke is always good. Leia can drop easy if she gets too far forward, but with all the other "heroes" coming at you, they may not be able to focus on her.

Op Luke

Chewie

Leia

Han

you could fit 2 ATRT (light cover and scary fire for enemy troops) with flamers and 3 units of troopers. I don't know if you can get enough damage through though.

I don't either but I gotta try. I love ATRTs and no configuration I have used has ever let me down. I look forward to a time when I can try it out.

I am trying to print the parts for the speeder today, I still have to see if the sizes match the legion figs. Fingers crossed.

Are you going for Hoth theme in terms of modeling? If so, the Rebel Veterans, FD Cannon, Tauntauns, and Airspeeder are ready to go out of the box. You can also easily add Wookies, Chewie, Jyn and Cassian as they all have what appears to be cold weather gear / fur. Many of the other models in the rebel range can work but I feel like you need to model them a little bit to really give them a winter weather feel to them.

As an example, fleet troopers are not wearing gloves. I'm sorry, but if you are fighting on Hoth, you're wearing gloves unless you are a wookie. Or take the land speeder. It's open topped. You have any idea how cold it is to drive around in a fast vehicle with the top open?! There's a reason nobody drives convertibles in the winter. Also, what if it snows?

Now those things may not matter to you, but for me they really detract from the theme of the army. My own rebel army is cold-weather themed, so I've thought about this topic maybe a bit too much. Best of luck to you!

Fleet Troopers are only wearing not wearing gloves if you paint them that way. The Landspeeder driver has goggles at least. I've seen what happens to someonw who is hanging out of the hatch of a Stryker when it's -20 degress out with just goggles and a helmet, so I can see what you're saying in that regard.

It still has a long way to go, it took me forever to find parts in a close pose that I could scale correctly, then I found out I haven't used my putty in... well I need new putty. The hard part will be finding models that look a little different, and they will all have torn cloaks and sashes to cover my lack of sculpting skill. The pilot should be easier, the rocket launcher... we will see. If I can find the parts I kinda want to do the nose gun as a mando holding it on a bipod instead of mounted, but again my ambition far exceeds my ability.
