Flying Solo V2 links

By Hiemfire, in X-Wing

I'm surprised this hasn't been linked to here. Must just be that new. šŸ˜„ Official XWTMG "AI" system is in Open Alpha.

It is probably only up since noon or so. It wasn't there first thing this morning in the east US.

Here's a link from the article to the actual ruleset: https://images-cdn.fantasyflightgames.com/filer_public/fc/4d/fc4dc724-5757-4d80-ae43-7616bc190c54/x-wing-solorules_openalpha-compressed.pdf

Added actual rules link.

It looks interesting, I'm going to try to it tonight. I'm glad to see ffg try experiment with solo play.

Honestly, I think that Heroes of the Aturi Cluster is so much more elegant in the approach, but, FFG can't use that and considering that the system here is using only what you can get in the official expansions, I think that is a good start. Maybe I'll break out my x-wing stuff again. (Honestly I do prefer Battlestar Galactica for fighter pew pew action, and I’ve been working in my own AI for that)

Next step co-op official campaign I hope.

Coming from Armada into X-wing, that would be great!

Sweet!

I have not actually played X-Wing for awhile, even before Covid struck; I've mostly moved onto games with solo/co-op options like Mansions of Madness, Descent, Frostgrave, etc. A decent AI system for X-Wing will definitely get me to break the ships out, again.

Yeah I've been out of X-Wing for the whole COVID season. This might make me give it another turn...

Really happy to see FFG working on solo rules. I play solo more than in groups as have no one to play with who likes x-wing. This gives me great options.

I hope this leads to a companion app where you can select a ship, then on a radar select the target/tally and then the app tells you the move and behaviour. That would be perfect!

Thanks FFG!!

Nice and timely, kudos FFG!

I like that it's a very "human" AI, not really one written for a computer. The stuff on linked actions, for example, isn't so much about code, but about "this is what the ship is trying to accomplish, and you need to get it there." A lot depends on the human players, and our willingness to actually do what's best for the AI ships.

I thought the Armada co-op campaign was still people playing against people. Are you saying there is an AI in the Armada campaigns? Everything I was able to find was that it's still people vs people. Was i missing something big?

Back on topic, this is exciting. It makes me happy that FFG is trying to develop ways for people to continue to play with their physical ships during these strange times.

They could if they wanted to.. it’s community driven but still originated by 1 guy.. they could make a contract for the use of rights even though it’s freeware.

Oh god, that would be amazing!

This is most definently going to lead to Aturi cluster type campaign. Cant wait!

Neat. I hope a full campaign is on the way and this system is just a placeholder for until the virus is controlled.

Just in the sense of an actual campaign solo or player vs player, Armada's is player v player but with an AI system and some reworking it could go solo.

But yeah mainly something none TDM for x wing would be fun I think

Not even, they would just use it. Someone over on Aramda did a custom campaign with elements very very similar to what FFG later pumped out. Wouldn't be surprised if they straight up copied HotAC and changed a few core elements

I would hope so however the fact they released this which uses a different AI seems to suggest they aren’t going that route...

but I agree a box set with cardboard objectives like the HotAC space station etc would be great. They can even expand upon wings.

I suspect since this is alpha and they have a need to monetize it.. we will see a box set and not just alpha rules.

I agree. And given the example, it looks like the AI system they have wont be quite as intelligent as the HotAC system.

That said, they probably wanted to avoid having to produce/sell extra components (which they would have to do with the HotAC system)

That said, I'm not sure what they plan to do beyond this. If this is Just the AI system, i dont see a reason to replace it with HotAC's AI system instead.

Much more clunky that the HotAC system as has been said.. The downside of the HoTAC system is that every ship needs its own IA logic on a ship card.. And that is a lot of stuff to support in current + future waves ..

They will produce something to monetize IT beyond rules... something cardboard is coming.
but I have a feeling the AI will be more simplistic than HotAC. Exactly what the reply above me said. They can’t support an AI for every new ship in the future or every change they make. This will be simpler.

agreed, something similar to armadas would be nice, as you start at 200/400 rising to 600/800.

Could be done in X wing starting at 200pts and rising to 500 ending in an epic game, just before final game you could allow for swapping of ships to upgrade for a huge ship.

Thx FFG, most welcome.

I am definitely going to test it. This is the form of X-wing we have most fun with together in the family. Several of my children and me together against an AI controlled opponent. Often some story as well. Also a welcome interrupt of the boring cutthroat 400/6 deathmatch at the club. With a headstory also less temptation to choose non-optimal for the AI, you want to have suspense. Of course with the smaller children sometimes the AI fudges a bit, still.

While it looks less "intelligent" and more random than the HotAC AI I will certainly test it.

Also, eagerly awaiting a test and mistakes ; ) by Shuttle Tydirium, @heychadwick
