Vader and Precognitive Reflexes vs Supernatural Reflexes

By RawF15, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Newer player trying to learn to fly with Vader. I don’t understand why Supernatural Reflexes is so much more expensive than Precognitive Reflexes. Supernatural says “before you activate” and Precog says “After you reveal your dial”. Won’t those happen pretty much the same time? Does “reveal your dial” imply you are also moving at that point? I understand that Precog has the limiting factor of not allowing you to perform more actions. is that the main reason why it is less expensive?

Functionally the difference in timing is mostly semantics on Vader because the things that would care about the difference between "before you activate" vs "after you reveal" aren't equipable to Vader. The big difference is that Precog also says, "If you do, you cannot perform another action during your activation."

With Precog you don't get your standard action and (very relevant for Vader in particular) you cannot trigger additional actions off that granted action either! Whereas with Supernatural that restriction is not there.

An extreme example of what you can accomplish with Supernat is: you can take the Boost(and 1 damage), then use Vader's ability spending a Force to Focus, then link from that focus into a red Barrel Roll all before executing a blue maneuver to clear stress(from the red roll), and finally take a Lock for your standard action. More typically Supernat is just used to fine tune a maneuver with a roll and still get your standard action.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense, thank you for the great explanation!

The timing is nearly the same, but something like the Grand Inquisitor crew says "After an enemy ship at range 0-2 reveals its dial, you may spend 1 force charge to perform 1 white action on your action bar, treating that action as red" and would trigger at different times on those reflexes cards. For Supernatural, Vader could perform the action action before triggering Grand Inq, whereas Precog has the same timing and would tirgger based on first player.

@nitrobenz got all the other pertinent stuff.

Nice catch. Very specific situation.
