Do i need any of the 2nd edition WFR supplements to play the 3rd edition core set? Are the two editions compatible with each other?
WFR Core Set ?
No.... and No. Unless you consider fluff compatible, although there are a few differences there.
The rulesets are completely different.
And the fluff of the first edition is superior anyway. The Enemy Within is always good to get, no matter what edition you're playing. But using anything from earlier editions with this new one will require some work on conversions.
Fluff of 1st edition was good, if you can get it and can afford it, buy it. Nonetheless the 2nd edition is
-easier to get
-much more stuff (eg. whole books about countries like Bretonia or Kislev)
-some of the books are absolutely great (like Realm of the Ice Queen or Nights Dark Masters) others (like the one about the Borderlands) are mediocre or simply bad. (as it is the the case with many rpgs)

But I'm not sure I'd like all of that stuff.

Is the Ice Queen fluff really that good? I've only recently heard about it (never played 2nd edition), but my impression from various comments on it was that it contradicted a lot of the established Kislev fluff and atmosphere. (Though I don't doubt there's plenty of room for some of the horse tribes to be ruled by an ice queen.)

RoIQ is IMO the best book of the 2nd edition series. They had other great books too, but this one hammers the Kislev lore in shape. Additonal one should be extremely thankful for every setting book outside the imperium. I cant stand the usual old Warhammer themes ("visit an imperial city to catch the cultist") anymore. No thanks, these themes became boring to me 10y ago.

Totally agree with that.
I really hope, that FFG will cover someday regions OUTSIDE the Empire.
With all due respect to the people that say "Warhammer IS about the Empire", I'm sick of utilising the same place on and on and on... bleh...
