Obi-Wan did his best, but he didnt have the experience or understanding of The Living Force like his master did. This gets driven home in the bickering arguments he gets in with Anakin in episode 2. Its like a brotherly power struggle and not a master/apprentice.
I agree that Qui-Gon was the wise, patient father figure that Anakin needed, however, the reason Qui-Gon was the perfect mentor/father for Anakin was that he was an unconventional Jedi Master who did not dogmatically follow the Jedi Code. Qui-Gon was more attuned to the Living Force and obeyed the Will of the Force, and I believe he would’ve allowed Anakin the flexibility to follow his own path, under Qui-Gon’s supervision.
Whereas Obi-wan followed the Jedi Code and the Jedi Council’s orders to the letter, which was probably oppressive and frustrating for Anakin. I suspect that Anakin had misgivings towards Obi-wan as a master because they were stuck with each other after Qui-Gon was killed; Obi-wan wasn’t the master that Anakin wanted, and Obi-wan had gone from a Padawan Learner to a Jedi Knight and immediately to master of a Padawan, and a part of him probably resented Anakin as Qui-Gon’s problem child that he became burdened with. Also, I think Anakin perceived Obi-wan’s deference to the Jedi Council and strict obedience to their instructions as a failing, whereas Qui-Gon thought for himself and used his own judgment. Anakin probably constantly compared Obi-wan to Qui-Gon and thought Obi-wan was lacking as a Jedi Master; by not doing things like Qui-Gon, Anakin probably believed Obi-wan was doing things wrong, and consequently Anakin was less inclined to listen and obey Obi-wan. For example, Anakin said that Obi-wan would’ve been “very grumpy” and disapproved of Anakin using his Force telekinesis to “show off” by levitating food during a meal. That’s something Qui-Gon probably wouldn’t have cared about. And that’s why Anakin thought that Obi-wan was holding him back.
Also, I don’t believe Qui-Gon would’ve allowed Chancellor Palpatine to gain such a strong influence over Anakin as Obi-wan had unwittingly allowed to happen. Even if Palpatine had tried, Anakin probably wouldn’t have been as easily influenced by Palpatine because his relationship with Qui-Gon was established and much stronger. I don’t know if Qui-Gon would’ve sensed who Palpatine was or what his machinations were about, but I’m certain he would’ve handled it better the Obi-wan did.
That’s why I’d agree that if Qui-Gon had not been killed by Darth Maul, he would’ve been an excellent master to Anakin and prevented his fall to the Dark Side.
