Location

By alboy, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

On a card Location for Independence Square the failure part says a gate opens here and you are drawn through it.

(1) Do you actually place a gate on Independence Square then you are sent through it and delayed.

(2) l know if a gate and a monster appear a doom token is added to the Ancient One but if a gate appears on its own without a monster do you still place a doom token on the Ancient One.

(1) Yes.

(2) Yes.

Gates never appear without monsters, as far as I know (unless there's an exception to this for Naacal Key). I'm pretty sure about this. Anyone disagree?

The location card for Independence Square only says a gate opens, there is no mention about a monster appearing.

There's some argument over whether that's a typo. Has that ever been officially clarified?

does a monster appears from naccak ley?

I think Joseph might have been referring to the Independence Square encounter, though NK fits the bill as well.

Well, I know that a monster always appears when you draw a Mythos card for gates (assuming the gate actually opens) but I'm less sure about gates generated by encounters. I'd have to go re-read the rules (curse you, Effort, you have foiled me again!) but my gut reaction would be to not play a monster unless it said so.

The rule of thumb I've been following is that an opening gate always does two things:

  1. Adds a doom token (this is official)
  2. Spawns a monster (there are only a couple "a gate appears" encounters that don't include the word "monster." Is it a typo?)

I would assume that the Naacal Key works the same way, but I wonder... do you get delayed when a NK gate opens on you? Since you're opening it (and even choosing the other world), you're clearly not surprised by it, so why would you be delayed? A Nightgaunt doesn't delay you when it throws you in a gate, and that's got to be more of a surprise than the Naacal Key!

Okay, well, if you're not sure either, I think we should include this in the FAQ.

Noobs are of use sometimes, so l like to think.
