Maul revisited

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey peoples,

With the end of clone wars I have been inspired to play around with CIS, I am normally FO and stay away from large bases as I have been Pavlov’s dogged from 1ed.

So if this is already a thing I apologise, but due to Corona and lack of CIS playing this is what I want to try.

Pick apart and go

I am by no means an expert in flying the CIS as a faction, and am still fairly new to the game as a whole, but I can’t help but wonder why anyone would EVER run a single Infiltrator in a list, and not use the Scimitar title on it. A 4-point Cloaking Device that never fails, has unlimited charges, and allows you to Jam an opponent at any range for free if they happen to get caught in your bullseye when you decloak? It’s REALLY good. It also can selectively make Maul 3 Agility, which (along with the Force) is incredible, and can really save you on those turns when the enemy outmaneuvers you and you’re facing several attacks. I flew a very similar list to this, and found Scimitar to be the strongest component in it. You could easily drop Grievous and Hull Upgrade for it, it’s probably better than both.

Here was my first attempt at it. I was pretty happy with the results, thought I took a narrow loss when the dice abandoned me in the late game, as his last ship (a shieldless Greer Sonnel) was able to completely outclass two damaged Precise Hunters for the win. I liked it enough that I will definitely be flying something very like this again very soon...

Maul’s Basic Robots

(65) Darth Maul [Sith Infiltrator]
(3) Tractor Beam
(5) TV-94
(4) Scimitar
Points: 77

(1) Landing Struts

Hull upgrade and Grievous are about points denial. The hull upgrade means you need to get 6 damage instead of 5 for half points, grievous discounts hits, with 6 vultures there is opportunity to recharge grievous a lot.
Cloaking helps the ship, but Maul works by blasting his opponents with double attacks a round. Hopefully 6 vultures can get blocks on something for token denial. It’s why Dooku is there, making Maul 4 force, allowing a TL on one opponent and leaving force over for the bonus attack. I would use clouds as you can’t afford to not shoot if you clip an asteroid. With network calculations and K2-B4 a vulture can be very tanky. You should expect to get 2 evades from your first defense roll, more from your second or third rolls if you manage to roll a natty or two.

That all makes good sense.

I’d still personally bend over backwards to get Scimitar into the list.

What about Hate to regen Force charges, dropping Dooku for Scimitar, and having some leftover points for something else?

Looks good. My only critique is Dooku requires force charges all being full which is hard for Maul to do. Hate may be the better play. When you are looking at 2+ hits and roll an eyeball, its instant use and saves Mauls HP.
