few questions

  1. going beyond a starter kit what is a good way to build up empire and rebels, should i go with more than one starter?
  2. could i get a rundown of the different play styles of all the different factions I want to have a better idea before i go first order or empire just because of knee jerk reaction of ooh TIE fighters and similar ships.
  3. if i found a copy of the force awakens starter is it worth it?
  4. I haven't found anything related to this but is there a model limit per type somewhere or is it more how many ships i can fit into 200 pts?

1. Unless you want to buy the Conversion Kits, stick to buying ships that have been (re)released in 2.0! A 2nd starter is a nice way to get 2 more TIE fighters and a 'free' X-wing along with some extra dice & back-up templates.

2. I can't help much here sadly, I bounce around chasing jank rather than dive deep into a faction. Each faction, for the most part, can field some sort of Swarm, some sort of Aces, etc

3. Not really, unless you want to buy the Resistance & First Order conversion kits for those 3 ships

4. Minimum 2, Maximum 8. Most lists run about 3-5

If you like podcasts, I’d check out some of the recent Radio TCX episodes. They’re covering different ship types that exist in the game and examples from each faction. Could help you get a sense of what different ships do for you to explore. Also they’re just super cool dudes with a lot of great content along with this current topic.

The buy guide is helping a good bit thank you

1. No need to get a second starter unless you’re looking to help a player try the game. Although the value is there for the ships. You will want a blister loose X-Wing and tie fighter both for unique pilots you can’t get in the starter set.

2. Honestly most factions can do most styles. Factions do better at some things more than others. Rebels do really well at beef (high hit point generic spam), as well as have great synergy with some named pilots. Aces are good-ish but not top tier ace play. Empire largely goes one of two ways: aces (Vader and Soontir for example) or swarm (6-8 tie fighters). They do alright with mini swarm of inquisitors as well.

Republic = beef + aces

CIS = swarmiest swarm of swarms

FO = swarm or beef, with FOs or SFs. Kylo makes a good ace, though FO cannot really do pure Ace lists like empire

Resistance = all across the place as a mix and match

3. It’s 1.0, so not really unless you got a super deal ($10 or so). You’d need conversion kits.

4. as others have said 2-8 ships in standard play

As a player i am torn between empire and first order since as far back as I can remember i have always loved tie fighters just aesthetics alone

I think it depends a little on play style.

I really like Tie SFs because they have the mobile firing arc option. So that places me more towards the FO.

Empire has more ship options, but most of their options I enjoy include elements only available in conversion kits. The FO have almost everything available as 2.0 models already

My advice? If you like ties, try the FO.

So they both advantages and draw backs

First order lists tend to be a bit more forgiving but they have less upside. Vonreg can survive a mistake but Soontir once you figure him out will win a lot of games (the learning curve isn't that bad). The FO only ship that hasn't been updated to 2.0 is the upsilon which is certainly good but there is less pressure to get it and a conversion kit. Right now, people are flying FO Salad lists which usually have a smattering of TIE barons, TIE/FO's, TIE/SF's, and TIE silencers. In extended Kylo, Tavson, and friend (like quickdraw) has been a mainstay since the faction released. FO salad lists are a combination of good ships and some blockers they rely on combo pieces like Lt. Rivas and holo (who can move tokens). Avenger swarms consist of Avenger and cheap FO's and SF's as the other ship die avenger gets more action to get better position or fully modified shots. The kylo tavson lists are trying to force you into bad decisions, do you want to shoot the reinforced Upsilon that now gets a focus or Target lock when it shoots back.

The empire has the some of the best aces in the game (darth vader, Soontir fel, and the Grand inquisitor). I do feel that a conversion kit is much more important. Getting access to Sloane crew and fifth brother gunner, as well ships that haven't been converted like the TIE Phantom (whisper is incredible) is almost mandatory. Generally imperial lists are either elite 3 ships (or 2 very elite and a support) or 6-8 ship swarms. Imperial ships are very extremely efficient. Aces lists generally are trying to get you to chase an ace while the others flank you. There are two main swarm variants. Sloan swarm is designed so that the other ships punish you as you try to kill the ship carrying sloane (this can be harder than it sounds TIE reapers are fast and wily) or if you kill the other ships you will be stressed and easy pickings for the rest of the swarm. Tie swarms are built around Howlrunner and Iden. Howlrunner dramatically improves the offensive capability of the TIES within range one and Iden hopefully keeps her alive for one or more rounds.

I would experiment with both and see what works best for you. From a tournament standpoint I think empire has the edge right now but FO has a lot more room to grow. If you go first order and can get a good deal on a force awakens box I would then shop for an Upsilon they periodically get really cheap online and then the conversion kit start to become a real good deal.

Possibly the cheapest solid entry into this game is SCUM.

For Hyperspace and Extended formats

Fenn Rau in a Fang Fighter (an amazing I6 Ace)
+
Boba Fett in the Firespray (with a few choice upgrades)

= Great list with plenty of ace + jouster action, lots of dice mods for the cost of two x wing 1.0 ships + a conversion kit. or two xwing 2.0 ships + any upgrades you really want to try.

#No bias

Just to clarify, the 2-8 ship limits people here are mentioning are the total of all ships in the squad, not model specific like you asked originally. Other than point total and a squad of between 2-8 ships, there's no model-specific limitations. The closest thing would be a small number of ship types for which only limited (ie unique or restricted to a certain number) pilots exist, no generics, like the Rebel captured TIE/ln Fighter (not yet released in 2.0). In that case you're limited by the number of different pilots that exist for that ship.

If you are going with rebels definitely pick up the Hotshots and Aces pack as it is currently the only way to get the s-foil upgrade for the b-wings.

Also I've been playing since 1.0 and bought 2 conversion kits for the original 3 factions. If you are willing to pay for the postage I will send you extra named pilot cards I have as they are currently collecting dust.
