Can a guy get some Death Troopers?

By irdonny, in Star Wars: Legion

Rabble. Rabble rabble rabble.

Lol, so I have been looking for death troopers at FLGS (call ins) and online for the last few weeks, and no one seems to have any in stock. I also see they are out of stock on FFGs site. Any one have a good idea of where to pick a pack up (for retail price)? My freshly painted Krennic is getting nervous without his entourage.

honestly most places in the US have not been able to order Anything FFG for the last 4 weeks at least. You may give your local guys a try in a week or two when they are allowed to actually order again from their distributors. I was just like you 2 weeks ago, but I've mellowed since shaving my beard off and prepping to get back to work.

I think I saw a couple at Battlegrounds in Ravenna Ohio before the shutdown, I'd give him a call, he may be able to work something out.

Call Hobby Bunker too. They do a lot of mail order and they had a TON of Legion before the shutdown.

Stuff they don't bother listing online, you have to call or email and ask if they have it. From a recent store newsletter:

So we are getting lots of FB messages and calls.
If you want something from our store and it's not on our site(most games, models and related stuff).
Here is the best way for me.
Email your list - pay by paypal or CC over phone. You can also call.
Emailing is best for lists of paint, supplies, Miniatures.
I can also send pictures of inventory via messenger or text. (tell me what you want: Example Gundam Kits or Rubicon Models).
I can ship the items to you or if you want to pick up you can pre-pay, set up a time and I will "brown bag" it outside our lower door. Contactless.
I am also dropping orders in Malden, Melrose, Wakefield, Stoneham (on my way home from work). $25 minimum.

Hey guys, how many units of Deathtroopers do you all run? How many expansions are worth purchasing once they become available again? I've heard more than two is overkill. Is that correct?

Pretty much. I own two units and played both of them a few times but I never really had the urge to play 3 DTs in my army. 3 of them would be half your army points and that is too much imo.

Yes. Most of the time 1 is sufficient. 2 is really fun though.

How about the other Imperial expansions like Shoretroopers, Scout Troopers, Royal Guard, Imperial Specialists, Stormtrooper Upgrade, etc.? Any of those you guys recommend doubling or tripling up on? Thanks gentleman.

Well let's see. I have six snowtroopers, three E-webs, two AT-ST's, Veers, and a box of Specialists. Plus Boba Fett, Bossk, Vader, 3 squads of Stormtroopers and a squad of speeder bikes.

I suppose I still need 3 dewbacks and probably a box or three of the new special stormtroopers cause they look so Sandtroopery.

I can't see the need to ever buy anything else for Empire though.

For what you have listed above, I'd start with one of each. See what works for you and expand from there. Maybe go ahead and start with 2 boxes of the scouts. That way you don't buy more expansions than you will use. For example, when they first came out I picked up 2 boxes of imperial specialists. But I've never needed both.

Here is my recommendation in order of usefulness (I only included the units you mentioned):

1. 2-3x Shoretroopers (these guys are monsters)

2. 1-3x Scouts (the sniper and sab teams are the best way to fill up your ranks/activations but the normal unit itself is one of the worst in the game)

3. 1-2x Specialists (Officer is great as a cheap commander and as an upgrade on snowtroopers. Med droids are a must have if you play death troopers, they restore 2 at the cost of 1. And believe me, if you take two units of DTs with you they will be priority targets for your opponent)

4. 1-2x Stormtroopers Upgrades (they are nice to have and give you some good alternatives to the DLT 19. Not a necessary expansion just more variety)

5. 1x IRG (IRG are only really useful if you play them with palp or if your list urgently needs something against lightsaber units)

P.S.: Owning all commanders and operatives is mandatory of course :). Dewbacks are pretty lackluster... I would place them around rank 4 on this list.

I would put a dewback before any of that for variety. Except maybe the specialists. There's 3 Imperial commanders/specialists to date which I have no plans of ever owning. I always thought I'd buy Krennic but since I have Veers and Captain Jane Doe, I found I have no motivation to get him.

I just got some stuff from my FLGS and saw that they have Death Troopers, as well as some of the other difficult to find sets. I don't think they have many, though. They recently set up a webstore: https://www.shopgreatfallsgames.com/search/star+wars+legion/

They have some of the stuff that you can preorder listed as back order, in case you wonder why unreleased units show up.

That's awesome. The $20 is hard to say yes to. I'm on the West coast, all shipping seems to be kind of expensive.

I didn't realize the shipping was that much. They created the online store more for local pickup, so I never considered the shipping costs.

Dunno. I just know they had a lot of Legion stock before the plague.

Makes sense. I was really hoping someone in the Portland area had one, but the places I've called have been out. I may have to be patiently impatient I suppose.

While I'm here, anyone have any good suggestions on how to get that nice* sandy white color for shoretroopers using basic colors? (Only have army painter basic colors)

Edited by irdonny

I used Desert Yellow (might not be in your basic color set but it is just 3 bucks for one color) and White as a 1:1 mixture, after that I washed them using Agrax Earthshade from Citadel (you can use every other brown wash. If I remember correctly this would be soft tone wash from AP). I wanted them to look a bit darker/dirty so I used more wash. Since I'm currently painting my second unit I can show you the color difference. Just be aware that I'm not a good painter so use this picture only as a color comparison 😁

P.S.: It was pretty dark in my room when I took the photo, so the only light source came from the top. So the best color comparison can be made from the top of their helmets.

That looks great! I swear no pic I've taken looks like the final product.

I know I need more color variation than i have but i feel I've done pretty well so far. I like your final color. So far i have not had great success putting washes on white or light colors. I only have a darker wash. You (or anyone) have a good way to make washer on light colors look smooth and not dirty? Yours looks great and I cant see any of the residual dirty Mark's that usually comes with the washes

I use wash medium from army painter (3-4 bucks for the bottle). That is a colorless wash that I mix with my dark wash 1:2 or 1:3 (black wash:medium) for light models like stormtroopers. That way you get a wash that has the same flowing properties as a normal wash but it reduces the black color pigments in your wash, so it won't look black and more like a light grey (and with that more like a shadow) when you apply the wash. To a certain degree (although not as good) you can also use water that had its surface tension removed by adding a tiny drop of soap to it.

Thanks, to avoid that, I think the most imporant thing is to work quick / don't use too much wash when you apply it. As soon as the wash starts to dry you need to stay away with your brush or you will only make it worse and that is a pretty short window. Often you need to use your brush because you use too much wash and it is pooling in the wrong places. That's why I think it is better to use less and carefully apply more wash later if it wasn't enough. But that can still make it worse / create tidemarks. To avoid that I make sure that the previous wash layer has completely dried and than I apply the wash with my small brush like a normal layer color and immediately remove mistakes with a qtip or towel before it dries up.

I've started painting with Legion and let me tell you, experience (and watching youtube tutorials) makes a huge difference! For my first stormtroopers I used brush on primer and black wash and in the end they looked like hideous bog monsters right out of a child's nightmare. I was so disheartened that I nearly gave up and threw them away 😁

I know the feeling. My first batch of rebels I was happy with, but stormtroopers gave me way more grief. The white on black painting I had much harder than trying to use colors, and I haven't dared try using a wash since like I said before I knew it would just make them look dirty. I'll look in to buying more washes.

Since recently moving, all the FLGS are about a half hour drive, so unfortunately Barnes and Noble and Hobbly Lobby are my closest resources, but I will make the trip soon to phone in a decent order since most are doing curb side pick up (trying to buy more than a $5 paint when I make the trip)

For another off topic question, how do you compress pictures? I tried uploading a pic I took on my phone and the file was way too big. My minis must be seen! Lol

You either upload it on a website (like imgur) and use the link to the picture or you resize (about 300x500 pixels) it on your phone because your phone will make a HD photo and that is too big. First option is a bit more work but it retains the quality of the image.

Did you find the Deathtroopers?

My store has 2 boxes
