Tantive IV - Primary vs Turrents Bonuses ... ?

By Dudds42, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi, I'm still finding my feet with X-Wing 2.0; With the Tantive IV expansion, the ship card (e.g. Alderaanian Guard ) shows the primary weapons as port and starboard, x4. However, two turrets are available for this ship. If I chose two turrets, e.g. Point-Defense Battery and Turbolaser Battery , would one of these two turrets become the primary weapon (port/starboard), or, can they both rotate fully as bonus weapons - which would mean, during the Engagement phase, the primary weapons could fire (as per the ship's card), then the PDB could fire, then the TB could fire ... ?

Have I missed something fundamental as the latter seems like a lot of firepower.

Many thanks

When you add a turret, you put the appropate turret arc indicator on one of the pegs of the base (front or back), then use the corresponding ID token and place it on that weapon, so you know which arc is for what weapon.

You can find more details in the Rules Reference (v1.1.0), on page. 37 under Turret Arc Indicators.

Your primary weapon remains in place so you'd have your primary, plus any turrets you add. And yes, You would get your regular attack with your primary weapon (or normal turret) then you can pay for any bonus attack from a hard point turret. (they specifically state they are Bonus Attack: so you couldnt use it 'in place' of your primary weapon).

" Your primary weapon remains in place so you'd have your primary, plus any turrets you add" - Excellent, thanks. That explains it ... for some reason I couldn't get my head round that bit. Much appreciated.

@Lyianx covered it well... as for why it seems like a lot of firepower, it can be! But it's also not the easiest ship to use: incredibly strong on the sides, with weak points in the front and rear. It's also VERY expensive to bring to the table, points-wise (a loaded Tantive 4 costs about as much as a standard squad)!

It's also a massive target and typically used in 400+ point games. So scaling wise, its still likely going to defend against more attacks than it can make. Not to mention it cant attack until Initiative 0. So each round, it can likely be damage/destroyed before it can attack.

My Epic-Ship-Getting-Init-Killed paranoia has convinced me to pretty much *never* go without Stalwart Captain. Maybe that's a mistake, but I'd hate to lose a came because I didn't take Fel's Wrath as a 6 point upgrade on a 200 point huge ship.

"After you are destroyed, you are not removed until the end of the End Phase."

Doesn't stop damage from nasty crits, but still.

Haha.

I will freely admit, ive never flown a Huge ship (especially in 2E) against another player. (played with it in a moc single game to get used to its movement). So i would imagine, if you did add one to your list, you would add in other ships to help support it, or at least, try to be as big, if not a bigger threat than it. So if you opponent did decide to target your Huge ship, it'd have to deal with all of its support as a consequence.

Seems like a tricky balance to be sure.
