A small question!!!

By guest461286, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Good evening to everyone! The question is: If during the movement phase I enter a portal to anothr world do I have an other world encounter in the next step of the other world encounters of the same turn?Thank you very much!!!

Yes.

and now that this is settled I have a question of my own: is being drawn through a gate by a nightgaunt delayes you?

Yes, you get an encounter, but bear in mind that you do not enter a gate during the Movement phase: you enter during the Arkham Encounters phase.

No, a Nightgaunt's "attack" does not delay you. However, it ends your movement phase, so you can't immediately use Find Gate or any other movement ability.

And if you enter another world via an encounter in Arkham which says ''A gate and a monster appear'' do you have an another world encounter in the next phase of another world encounters in the same turn?

Again, yes. These are 2 completely different phases. First there's the Arkham Encounters Phase, and then the Other World Encounters Phase.

Thank you very much!!!

Actually, that reminds me: I was just glancing over the faq, which mentions that the reason for getting delayed when one gets sucked through during the mythos phase is so that one won't return to arkham after only one other world encounter, but then why did they make "A gate and a monster appear!" also delay you?

because you were suprised-sucked to a portal leading to foreign land and you're now a bit disoriented?

This is a good thematic justification, but I think the motivation was really simplicity. If you got sucked in during the Mythos phase and weren't delayed, you would only have one OW encounter before returning. The solution was to delay you when a gate opened on you. They extended this to gates opening on you during the Arkham Encounters phase because it's easier to make a global rule than to make a rule and an exception.

Tibs is correct from a mechanical POV. For a slightly more ephemeral POV:

Consider the notion that you generally only have one Encounter per turn. In an Arkham Location or an Other World, you draw one "card Encounter" per turn. But some of those cards will move you around, or there's a gate where you're standing and you're already planning to move around. Consider these events as something of a delayed action from the Movement Phase...Movement Phase Overtime, if you will.

You're not really having an Encounter at that Gate on the Woods during the Arkham Encounter Phase; you're extending your Movement Phase an extra inning in order to have your real Encounter in the Abyss.

You're not really having an Encounter at the Historical Society that tells you to move to the Black Cave; your real Encounter is waiting for you there, and the Historical Society is suddenly piggybacking onto your previous Movement Phase.

So when a Gate opens on you suddenly and drops you to the Dreamlands during the Arkham Encounter Phase, you haven't had your Encounter that turn yet. So the OW card you draw is not your First Official Dreamlands Encounter, it's your delayed Arkham Encounter...a Dreamlands Encounter Prequel of sorts. The one that comes BEFORE your Official Two OW Encounters.

That helped me a LOT when the late great Millmaster wrote it a few years ago. Granted it's all kinda hooey-ish, definitely not for any kind of manual, but my brain loves it and can more easily visualize that beyond the "rules". Did that help?

You lost me at "ephemeral" partido_risa.gif, my eyes glazed over after that.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Yeah, both explanations are helpful; thanks, guys
