Need Help!! Thinking of purchasing AGOT LCG

By guest407407, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I used to play Magic the Gathering and realy enjoyed it. I also love AGOT books and boardgames. I was wondering, do you have to buy mulitple chapter packs or do you only have to buy one?

I like the open aspect of knowing what cards you are buying.

Can you mix different houses into your deck, or do you have to play a specific house?

How are decks created and are there a card limit?

Thanks

Kenneth

Here's the scoop:

As the game is at present, if you want a playset of each card, you will need to purchase 3 copies of each product released (or two of the Princes of the Sun expansion). You can run three copies of a card in your deck (minimum 60 card deck), and the current chapter packs come with a distribution of 40 cards 10 cards at three copies each and 10 cards at 1 copy each. The Core Set has multiple copies of some cards, but most cards are only 1 copy each. The Kings of the Sea expansion is 55 cards, one copy of each, and a resin Greyjoy house card.

However, this is about to change. Starting with the Lords of Winter deluxe expansion and Illyrio's Gift chapter packs, each new release will contain 3 copies of each card in the package. The price per Chapter Pack will go up from $10 to $15. So you only have to buy one of each to get full playsets.

If you enjoyed Magic and enjoy Martin's books, I strongly suggest picking this game up. The non-random format makes the game more affordable than ccgs (even if you decide to buy 3 copies of each pack), and the game is (imo) the best card game out there. You can run cards from other houses in your "house" deck, but they cost 2 additional gold (the resource mechanic) to play. Some cards have the "House X Only" restriction, which means you can only put them in a deck that matches your house card. Also, each player builds a separate Plot deck of exactly 7 different cards (some plots let you run 2 copies of them, but at present there are only two such plots in the game). At the start of each turn you choose which plot you want to use for the turn. This plot tells you your base gold (other cards can increase your income, or allow you to reduce the cost to play cards), your base initiative (to determine who gets to choose which player goes first) and your claim value. Claim is important because when you win a challenge as the attacker, the claim number reflects how many of your opponent's characters will die in a Military challenge, how many random cards are discard from their hand in an Intrigue challenge and how much power you get to steal from your opponent to move to your house card in a Power challenge. Since the object of the game is to be the first player to get 15 power, each of these challenges reflects a different method of getting there. Since there is already a great demo video on the website, I'm not going to go into more detail.

Also, if you decide to play, go to the metagame section and see if there are other people in your area already playing the game. It's a great way to meet new players and learn new strategies for the game.

Hello Recon,

As someone who has played Magic myself, I find GoT to be a much more immersive, enjoyable game. if you like the source material, I think you will love the game.

As for chapter packs and quantity, it's really up to you. There are some cards that are 1x in each chapter pack, while others are 3x, so if there is a certain card you want 3x of, you may have to buy certain packs three times. However, starting with the next chapter pack cycle (Brotherhood without Banners), FFG is switching to their new format where one gets 3x of each card in every pack. There are search sites where one may look up what cards are in each cycle elsewhere on these forums. Just do a search and I'm sure you will find them. I think some folks even include this information in their signatures.

Minimum deck size is 60 cards plus 7 plots. Cards from different houses can be combined into a deck as long as the card doesn't have the "House X only" restriction on it. Note however that to play a card that is OOH (out of house), one must pay a 2 gold penalty. There is a plot that eliminates this penalty though, so if you had a lot of OOH in your deck, that may be a plot you'd want to include as part of your seven.

Hope that answers your questions. Enjoy the game, and if you have any other questions (which I'm sure you will once you get into it), don't hesitate to post here. We have a very knowledgeable and helpful community here on the boards.

Thanks for the detailed responses guys. Know i've got to talk my brother into it. He, like myself, is a big fan of RR Martin.

I just ordered a core online and I was wondering if that was a plot in the core set. If not, what is it called and which expansion or chapter would I have to buy?

The plot that eliminate for a round the OOH penalty is named Alliance and it is placed into "Princes of the Sun" expansion (Martell one).

I suggest you to follow the 2 links i have in signature:

one contains all info to play online and most off all all cards images with a deck builder associated with all cards out so far.

the other allows you to quickly have an overview on all CPs and card (with all info necessary) via web.

hope you will enjoy the game of throne!!!

Yep. Gualdo covered your question on the "Alliance" plot.

I prefer the "Dabbler" LCG database, but for some reason the page isn't loading for me the past couple days. Anyone else use his page? Anyone else having problems to load it lately? ( http://agot.gotdns.com/ ) is the web address I've been using for it. Perhaps it's been moved?

I had problems logging too

OK, thanks Gualdo. I know it's not just me then. I hope the site comes back up soon. It's currently my favorite search engine for GoT.

Yeah, it's offline. I love that page too.

Thank you Gualdo, that will be very useful.

I had heard about Dabbler and Tsumainn before but neither of them seem to still exist.

Dabbler is working just fine again gran_risa.gif

All hail Dabbler! Thanks for the update, Elooooooi.

You're welcome ^^
