The Big Dumb 24 Hour Live Vassal Tournament - $500 RAISED FOR PROJECT C.U.R.E

By BiggsIRL, in Star Wars: Armada

So... I'm not sure that at the higher end the round number really matters? And if a R2 10 point player gets a "Seal Cub" with 9 points on R3, does it really matter that much? It's a relaxed format tournament.

The only prize support is pride in playing 4 games, or ALL 24 HOURS. ... and maybe an alt-art card if you play 4 rounds.

Thing is, this is a REALLY cool idea - I'm optimistic this can be made to work! But I also suspect - if someone is deciding to commit to 4 games in 24 realtime hours - they are looking for matches that will be at least interesting to them.

IE., not getting a total disaster of a game because they had a few okay matches, but then got paired against the current-world-leader in that person's FIRST round. Or conversely, being an odd match in the first round and doing okay, then getting a series of 'seal-clubbing' games afterwards from the odd scoring position.

Is either of those things fun to anyone? In a typical formal event, a serious mismatch of skill is unavoidable to happen randomly in the first round...but RIGHT after that it settles out quickly enough. Ideally that should be something attempted here, too. I'm assuming most people setting the time aside for this are not interested in either impossible games OR 'seal-clubbing'.

With some of the names on here, I’d consider it an honor and a learning experience to be destroyed. If a skilled player jumps in mid-event, they won’t be likely to fight someone who’s already played games just because of the score difference (unless they’re the odd 0 out, then they might fight a 1 or 2 pointer.)

And the best part is you can set aside as much or as little time as you want. Especially if you’re a seal getting clubbed, because that usually means a quick game. The harder matchups will select for those who play and win the most rounds, so a veteran admiral getting an easy route to victory is unlikely as well.

Not that I harbor any objection to @Truthiness’s suggestion of avg. points per round.

@xanderf the tournament is so relaxed @MandalorianMoose has promised not to use an Onager or quasar.

As Biggs says, no need to overthink it.

I don’t remember saying I wouldn’t use an onager 😜

Nope I heard it too.

Yes, he said not only would he not use them, he'd stoop to playing Rebels.

I think he went so far as to say he was using Leia as his commander.

Yep. @MandalorianMoose said he wanted to show that he was better with Leia than @geek19, and even boasted that he could take three peltas to show up @shmitty and @rasproteus, because, and I quote here: "anyone can win with two peltas. It takes skill and finesse to do it with three."

So, here are the possible score bands for a 4 round tournament.

R1: 0

R2: 1-10

R3: 2-20

R4: 3-30

So really the only danger of a "seal clubbing" is someone off a great R1 game playing someone with 2 'poor' games in R3, or 3 pretty bad games in R4.

If we just sorta soft prevent a 2 round difference in matchmaking, then we are good.

Worst case scenario... It's Relaxed.

My biggest worry is actually byes.

No Byes!

Bye You!

So anyway, what do you get if you play all 24 hours? Well, here's something to sweeten the pot. I will donate $1 for every player that plays 4 games to Project C.U.R.E. which provided medical supplies and equipment to the developing world (and also the US after we got hit with COVID-19), up to a $50 maximum.

Delivering health and hope
Thousands of people die every day in the developing world because local hospitals & clinics don’t have the medical supplies and equipment needed to save lives in their communities. Children are missing the chance to get an education and live a full life due to illnesses that would be treatable if they had access to proper health services. It’s Project C.U.R.E.’s mission to change that. Together we will deliver health & hope to the world. And now, due to COVID-19 we are actively supporting local healthcare systems in the U.S. including donations to hospitals, EMS and governments in Denver, Nashville, Houston, Chicago, and Phoenix.

But that's for players that play 4 games. For every player that plays all 8 games (4 games each with 2 different fleet entries) I will donate $5 up to a $50 maximum. So there is your prize support! There may be other prize support.

By playing you are providing donations to a good cause!

I'll match @BiggsIRL dollar for dollar.

I'll match you @BiggsIRL AND put in $5 for every game @MandalorianMoose plays as Leia.

Update: I think I'm gonna open the List Entry a week before the tournament begins, so you'll be able to start registering on Saturday. You'll still need to check in the day of when you are ready to start playing.

@LTD are you willing to judge rounds 5 & 6? I'm not currently sure how many will join you round 6.

I would really like to get an idea of who is actually willing to join me in as a judge. Offer whatever coverage you can!

Yes I should be available to judge if needed during 5 and 6 - I was hoping to play at those times. But yes, not likely to be many folks about in the rest of the world.

Us late night North American West Coasters could help with rounds 6 & 7 as well...that should be 8pm and 11pm, perfect for my night owl habits.

Is this posted on the Aussie and NZ Online Armada FB page? Might round up a few players that way...

Yes, it has been shared on Australian groups.

After our ANZAC Day Open is over I will push it again in the various Antipodean groups.

For some reason the folks playing online around here since the lockdown seem to have a strong preference for TTS over Vassal. I have even "bit the bullet" and spent money on a computer program... but I took it out of my Armada budget so I'm technically still a luddite.

7 & 8 are my 7am and 10am

Round 1: Biggs
Round 2: Biggs
Round 3: Biggs
Round 4: Biggs
Round 5: LTD
Round 6: LTD / Maturin
Round 7: Ginkapo / Maturin
Round 8: Ginkapo

Anyone want to pick up one of the earlier rounds - 3/4 for example? I'll let LTD / Maturin / Gink discuss who wants to actually do 6/7 and let me know.

@BiggsIRL I'll support rounds 2-4. If possible I'll play those rounds, if not I'll sit out.

@LTD @Maturin I am playing on playing 1, 2, 3 and sleeping before 7, 8 so dont mind TO'ing those two.
