List of common tools for playing x-wing online?

By Wazat, in X-Wing

I'm going to run a new poll (sure been a while!) and the subject is:

Which application do you prefer for playing X-Wing online?

  1. Table Top Simulator (X-Wing 2.0 Unified mod)
  2. Vassal (X-Wing Miniatures Game module)
  3. Fly Casual
  4. Other
  5. I don't play x-wing online

I figured it was relevant since so many people are burning up for x-wing games during social isolation. And it may encourage some players to try out one of the options to get some game time in!

But I want to make sure this list is covering the common options -- am I missing one?

Thanks!

Maybe a Google poll form is more suited to this?

if you want to learn how to install Vassal and play it, go to http://xwvassal.info/guide

if you want to see what events are in signup phase or going on currently, go to : https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=52h67q92ipbpbo5oin0a7mbn8k%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FNew_York

(there are more events going on right now, but this calendar system is brand new)

if you want a website that directs to both of these things and more, http://xwvassal.info

edit - echoing that Discord is a must if you want to chop down the play time by a third or by a half

I play TTS when I can. Iโ€™d highly recommend discord as a tool for communication before and during the game though

To be clear, I've not started the poll yet, I'm just making sure the list I have is complete. I'll be using CrowdSignal to run the poll, which I can embed in the wiki.

Is my list complete?

Fly Casual has no online function really, so it's a bit of a mood point on the list?

Right now both the TTS and Vassal communities are doing amazing with community run leagues and tournaments, those two are pretty much the best we have instead of IRL X-Wing.

Oh, I thought Fly Casual said it supports multiplayer. Maybe that means passing the phone around to the other players though.

Should I still include it with a note " (not online, just vs AI)", or omit it?

I guess you could share screen and play in Hotseat mode. ๐Ÿ˜

Hmm. Are those games on TTS and Vassal all 2e?? OR are any still using 1e rules?

There's different mods for 1.0 on both TTS and Vassal. Vassal mod may even be split between 1e and 2.0 and you pick one; I don't remember.

theoretically you could play X-Wing with Zoom or some other video chat and have all the physical components be on one person's end and the other person sets dials and holds them up to the screen, but I'm not sure anyone actually does that so your list is probably complete lol

Thanks everyone! New poll thread is posted here.

Iโ€™m planning on doing this. And having the other person just write down dials on a sheet of paper.
and just realize that give them the benefit of the doubt when they obviously misjudge the distance cuz of angle and cam.
itโ€™s also beautiful to play against an opponent that never does horribly stupid things cuz they get mild redos. Haha

Funny this should come up. Friends of mine and I are playing the CR90 campaign by text with pics!

Its all 1st edition strictly and stuff that appeared in the movies...no TIE Defenders or weird Stuff like that. Forgot how well the game plays that way ๐Ÿ™‚

I have played two hot seat games with a friend via zoom on fly casual. I just share the fly casual screen. When it is his turn to set dials, I leave the room and my wife so graciously takes over and talks with him to help him set dials so I don't know his maneuvers. It works out pretty well! He can't use vassal or tts because he doesnt have access to a computer yet.
