12 New Unofficial Official Heroes Project

By sportscomedian, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Working on a way to get some more heroes into Descent. Not that the game needed more, certainly not. But this is what quarantine boredom does to a person. And it seems pretty certain now that Fantasy Flight is done releasing anything for Descent 2nd edition, and maybe Terrinoth in general.

Going to try to make them characters that are already in the Descent universe(most unreleased from 1st edition), and then find minis and make cards to get them properly integrated into the game. Will use the stats and abilities from the conversion kit heroes as a starting point, with some suggestions by this thread from the official forums: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/299679-missing-12-heroes-from-conversion-kit/

To get these seamlessly integrated you can get the cards printed at Staples. Right now delivery is free, mine arrived within 48 hours of ordering! Just do no re-sizing printing, the files below should be the correct size for Descent character cards. Do a front/back print with Head to Head orientation(otherwise the back will print upside down, although not a huge deal). I had all my cards laminated, so did the 110 lb cardstock weight, and once laminated you can not tell the difference between official and unofficial. They also have 12pt Postcard stock available, which is probably more accurate to the real cards unlaminated, but it was more expensive and I didn't really need it.

For the minis I've found either real figures or proxies for everyone here(if you don't have minis what's the point with Descent). The scale is a little off in some places, but Descent figure scales are all over the place anyway, so it's not out of line with the regular figures. I'm providing links to Miniature Market, as they are a great online shop, but pretty much everywhere sells these figures, just do a web search based on the names. Their bases aren't the right size though, so I'm re-basing on litko bases from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MV91ORG/

Adding new characters

Updated with some new characters.

For Laughin Buldar's heroic feat, don't really understand the wording. Is he doing a ranged attack to each enemy in LOS? Or does he gain additional melee attacks to the targeted enemy for each enemy in LOS?

For Kari's HF, does it cost 2 fatigue to reroll 1 red power dice? If so, perhaps change the wording to "... Afterwards, you may spend 2 fatigue to roll 1 additional red power dice with the same effect."

Looks like you used some of my ideas 😉

Like some ideas but not most of the minis : Nolzur d&d minis are way too big to fit Descent. Even if it is a bit expensive Hero forge is the best way to have the most corresponding miniatures. I've made some should show you

According to heroes of Terrinoth Kari should be a scout

Bogran a mage ?? He is a scout. I hope this is a mistake

Yes, made sure to give you credit for some of your great tweaks. 🙂

I disagree about Nolzurs, they are the perfect size once you rebase them. Some of the Descent heroes are ridiculously sized compared to others anyway, ala Nanok of The Blade or Sir Valadir. Some of the late heroes are comically a different scale than the early ones, so I think they're a match for the mismatch of character sizing that is Descent. But maybe Nolzurs is similar, and some of their minis are oversized. But the ones I used above are all pretty perfectly proportioned. The only one who's a little tall is the wizard.

Here's some comparisons: Dwarves: knlmSCe.jpg He's right in between Grisban and Krutzbeck, if anything he's too small compared to the Krutbeck and Corbin.

Kirga vs. Nanok: cMGVbpr.jpg

And yes, I switched their character classes because there are too many scouts as it is, and I wanted to get a balanced 12 out of these. Since these characters have so little backstory anyway, I didn't mind the change.

Just one thing: isn't Hugo the glorious from 1st edition also still missing? I know you were aiming for balanced archetypes, but thats less of a problem with hybrid classes.

But Bogran as a mage ... no seriously no.

I've got the miniature you choose for Aurim and he is way too big.

I think you should not change classe type but I do think that adding dôme news is a good idea since mage and healers are far les than scouts or warriors.

I've thought of some I will add soon.

just some alt figure suggestions

https://www.reapermini.com/search/mage/latest/77174 <-- Here's an alt figure suggestion for Mad Carthos.

Also sad that this guy's the wrong scale, would have made a great Tobin Farslayer --> https://www.darkswordminiatures.com/shop/index.php/miniatures/george-r-r-martin-masterworks/euron-greyjoy.html

https://www.reapermini.com/search/kord the destroyer/latest/77061 <-- the one I'm using for Buldar. kinda wrong scale, but the pose is too awesome. lol

and the one I'm using for Bogran ... though that's because the intial art had him postured as Nara the Fang's sidekick (aka he's Batman's Robin) -> https://www.reapermini.com/search/assassin orc/latest/60057

I messed around a little on Hero Forge and it seems that you can make some pretty good proxies to match artwork.
So if you've got a lot of money I guess Hero Forge is a good option.

Laughin Buldar

Tobin Farslayer

Varikas The Dead

Note that I haven't adjusted the hight among other things. So do not order any of these right away before checking all the sliders out for yourself.

Also, feel free to give suggestions on how to improve them. I guess you'd have to fix some things with green stuff after ordering them to achieve even closer results. For example Laughin Buldar's cat shoulder pads or Kirga's giant cloak.

There's something strange : Eliam's total attribute is 12 instead of 11 ?

By the way where do you find your Aurim artwork ?

Awesome thread. I was going to work on bringing in the missing unused new characters too that were found hidden away in the code of the RTL app- and maybe some newer artwork people found (I'm convinced it's Shadar on the artwork of the Lost Legends deck):

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1667128/unreleased-heros

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/descent-journeys-in-the-dark-second-edition/products/lost-legends/

You may also get some inspiration from characters in the other Terrinoth games and Terrinoth artwork, such as for the likes of catfolk (the Genesys RPG 'Realms of Terrinoth' sourcebook is useful for ideas and lore):

https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/genesys/products/realms-terrinoth/

I'm going quite deep into the lore and tying things together for my projects- so a lot of these heroes, citizens and adversaries already have roles planned for in what I'm working on- I've a lot of quite innovative ideas in progress with new maps and some long-forgotten legends and threats maybe set to make a reappearance, as well as bringing more of some of the groups not appearing much in Descent such as the Latari and Uthuk into the game and making some thematic links to first edition and older Terrinoth games. (I've gone very deep into the Mennaran lore rabbit hole so the roadmap to legend is paving itself nicely with various possible fan expansions ahead as a result 🙂 )

Thus I'm already working on things for those characters and entities that didn't make it over from first edition (even the pirates and parrots!) - first edition might inspire you also- there are some epic lieutanants and characters/beings to make use of.

As you mention and I've mentioned elsewhere if you can still find them for sale some of the Runebound sets have some of the figures such as The Gilded Blade (Red Scorpion) - these are still around, I got 'The Mountains Rise' quite recently. But Unbreakable Bonds is drawing a blank so Eliam's a tough call. Luckily however as I've been obsessively completing my first edition main sets - I've just got 'Road to Legend' and 'Altar of Despair' finally- the latter has him among its six heroes (Eliam, Kirga, Aurim, Sahla, Corbin and Tahlia) so I finally have his figure thus may quite possibly now have them all other than the four new ones they didn't use and most of the first edition lieutenants- I only have the ones that are also in 2e, Gata and hopefully soon Slaggarroth the spider-person.

Going to start a fun job of properly organizing my collection on a spreadsheet with photos so I can coordinate things, especially where I have different minis such as Descent's Baron Zachareth and his RWM versions or the first edition minis vs second edition Heroes and Monsters ones etc, I've already started collating info like this to coordinate my projects and finalize my plans for them now I've finally got most of the few things I'd been waiting to get. I really like the extra options RWM gives me too- such as a mounted 'chunkier' version of the baron for when he's more of a threat, or Lord Hawthorne with his steed.

Will eventually start painting them and sharing my results on that, but won't be for a while as I want to get the games projects finished first. On those there are a few things I'd need FFG's permission for too which will obviously affect how things evolve depending what they say when I ask, but quite excited for it all- the realms of Mennara and its established lore give plenty to work with as a starting point for ideas and I have much planned and in the murky pipelines below Terrinoth. So about that Descent is dead thing,.......

Whenever you start getting this massive Terrnoth opus off the ground, message me and Ill play test or we can play test online or something.

Thanks. The global situation's actually giving me a bit more time so I've been catching up with the flat-related jobs that have been delaying my Descent projects (having to do real life stuff- more work when off work 😞 ) - everywhere's closed pretty much so it's just work and essentials shopping so I tend to have more time when I'm off work- social isn't happening much other than a bit of online social.

I've done enough of the household work to start devoting some of my time to the Descent project again soon- with the global situation I'm looking to make my Descent quests work solo and coop as well as vs an overlord so they have all three styles- and am also going to start putting them out in very raw, work-in-progress alpha testing form so people can try them out and playtest them whilst I continue to work on them. I'm not sure how this would work for the overlord variant as for anyone isolating they're stuck with people in the same household or needing to find a way to play online which might be easy for coop but tricky for overlord play re how you manage cards and card secrecy etc. I do have Tabletop Simulator so don't know if I could make playtest decks in that, maybe coded cards referencing which ones to draw so players can draw the corresponding cards from the real ones but there's a way other players don't know who has what- will have to think about this.

Will need playtesting as there will inevitably be problems and challenges of either side being under/over powered, things that don't quite work etc to fix.

To this end I'm finishing off the alpha of my most recent idea as it seems the logical place to begin as it goes right back to the very origins of the evils that taint Mennara-

'The Descent of Mennara' is an adventure which takes place before and during the first darkness after a foolish act by the earliest elves and its cruelest of punishments by the angered Yrthwright dragon Mennara sets a horrific series of events in motion which seed the troubled future of the realms of Mennara having corrupted both the lands' earliest inhabitants and their originator. This corrupting influence can only spread, soon tainting the very fabric of the land itself, casting a long shadow into its future history. This adventure explores such beginnings and the first ordinary citizens that rise to challenge the darkness who might, fate, courage and wisdom permitting, become Mennara's first heroes....

I've got two longer blocks of days off coming up at the end of this month - five and seven together yay - so am going to tie up some of the jobs at the flat this month fingers crossed (I already made a lot of progress with a recent holiday as the event I'd booked it for has been postponed/cancelled so I finally feel like I can at least see the finish line of a big job that's bugged me for ages) so they are then out of the way, so realistically most of my main Descent work will likely kick off again in June as I still have to prioritize the work with the flat because real life. I may get tempted to work on it before then and juggle doing a bit of both as I'm liking the ideas and eager to get it out there- temptation of creative urge vs priorities! But it's certainly smarter to focus on the flat first so I have to think discipline and common sense- get it out of the way!

Then there's the challenge of juggling the Descent project itself- there's a player resource I want to do for Genesys RPG which will also help me create the Descent project modules for it, logging my collection on a spreadsheet for adventure designing purposes as there's a huge usefulness in being able to quickly look certain things up which will save lots of time and I promised to do a couple of things like playtesting/proofreading for a few others on here which I've still got to get round to 🙂 (Rugal gives me the look.) Eventually...

if there's a link I can look onto, yes, I will

I'll put it up with a link once it's cooked.

It will be somewhere between a small and big box expansion (somewhere between as I haven't any new map tiles/elements planned for it- partly because I'm using layouts that thematically echo some of the game's history so wanted to stick to the game tiles)

The nine heroes planned for being central to it are:

Legendary hero: Alric Farrow, Soldier of the Realms (as the good version of himself before he became something else altogether, Sir Alric as a lieutenant/agent therefore being unavailable to the overlord player/side)

Ruen The Living

and his later form (in my use of the characters)

Varikas The Dead

Shadar Runearmor

Brother Glyr

Eliam of Scorpionsands

Mage Carthos

Kalia of Nerek Hill (a new healer elf)

and one ? To Be Decided ? possibly one of the ancestors of Laurel of Bloodwood referenced in her bio (as a scout)

To balance the archetypes and as it fits, Shadar will be a mage (I see her as being an elementalist) and Ruen (with his lack of armor) although he seems of a warrior nature (and Varikas is a warrior) will be a scout as I see him as a kind of military scout, a role in which he can get away with his minimal armor! But he's clearly worried about what he's breathing in as he has an armored face mask, so minimal body armor but an 'I ain't getting no germs' thought process. 🙂

Also Bogran the Shadow appears as an NPC innkeeper.

Oh man. That dwarf fig for Brother Glyr... with the huge forehead and tiny eye area he looks like he has downs. And I don't mean that as a short joke 😂
