Aces High Help

By Gupa-nupa, in X-Wing

Hi all. I will be playing a TTS game tonight (Aces High esque fomat), with a point cap set at 85 points, no limit on number of ship bases on the table, extended. I was doing some thinking on what to fly and as of right now I have two main ideas. I would appreciate any input on these ideas, as well as any other suggestions.

Idea #1:

Major Vynder (41)
Elusive (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
Proton Torpedoes (13)
Proton Rockets (7)
Advanced SLAM (3)
Os-1 Arsenal Loadout (0)
Adv. Proton Torpedoes (6)
Homing Missiles (5)

Idea #2:

Wedge Antilles (55)
Snap Shot (7)
Plasma Torpedoes (9)
R2-D2 (8)
Shield Upgrade (6)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Thank you for your ideas!

Elusive seems odd for Vynder, I'd switch to Saturation Salvo for max damage, or Marksmanship for Crit potential.

For Wedge, drop R2-D2. Regen is a trap in Aces High. Getting blown up is a perk to get your Proton Torpedo charges back. I say Proton Torpedo because you'll want to switch those out for the Plasma's. R3 Astromech will give you an extra lock to give you choices of targets, or R4 Astromech for a smidge more maneuverability. Snap Shot is a good call for Wedge to sneak in first blood shots since his ability still works for that shot, and in Aces High, someone should invariably drive through your range 2 arc.

Good advice here. I've been playing 80pt Wedge with Outmanoeuvre, Proton Torps, and Afterburners. Kill things quickly, get blown up, re-spawn with all your charges back and repeat. Great fun - particularly when you get to say to eg Whisper: you have no green dice! :D 5pts more gets you an R3 astro.

But the best Aces High ship is Wulfwarro. There was a lengthy discussion about how powerful he is in this format in the UK Facebook group shortly after the System Open.

Oh! Apparently I need to be playing Aces High. Wullffwarro is one of my favorite pilots in the whole frick'n game! ^_^

How is he often equipped? I assume Saw crew; he's almost mandatory on a Wullff build! Probably Targeting Computer too for double mods. What talent... Snap Shot, Lone Wolf, or maybe Expert Handling? Is another crew useful like Chewbacca, Chopper, Nien Nunb, or Kanan?

For 80 points you get Wullff with Snap Shot + Saw + Nien + Targeting Computer. Lock every round you can so you have reroll and focus on your nuclear attacks. Burn yourself down fast to kill foes even faster. Don't fear stress too much, literally every bank clears it with Nien. But crits can be Wullff's bane (especially damaged engine) so there's some value to choosing Chewie instead. Snap Shot doesn't mesh with his ability or double mods, but at his middle init, the occasional first blood attack can really help him compete with points-stealing aces.

I played against 2 different Wulfwarro builds. They both won the rounds, one by correctly doing a hard stop when I was about to kill him to win the game, ensuring I collided with him! He then killed himself with Saw to prevent another player getting more points after he'd fired. Very clever. I still prefer the play style of a zoom and boom Wedge myself. I blew up more often than almost any other ship in all 3 games I used him in, but was always in the running to win overall.

Both had Lone Wolf and Saw. One had a Hull Upgrade, the other had Targeting Computer. I can't remember which other crew they had, but they weren't the same.

In our local Aces High, we've made self-damaging to either deny First Blood points or to kill yourself to deny points cost you the points that someone else could have gained.

One Aces High star that surprised me was Dengar. Give him Painbot, Contraband, and title, and he actually works in this format since he can get those charges back.

In my experience, I4 always seems like a good idea to last hit weakened enemies, but always ends in getting init killed over and over. I5 or 6 is a must.

This was my tragic experience when I tried aces high (I've only played it once). I don't remember which pilot I flew, but not being top init was a disaster. You either need to be high init to get points, or you need to have some gimmick (like snap shot or nuclear wullffwarro) to ensure you compensate.

My aces high list is Sabaac with snap shot, shield upgrade, fifth brother, and cluster mines. It does surprisingly well.

Swap the Shield for Afterburners! Go to Ludicrous Speed!

Aces High works even better if you treat all Initiative values as equal and rotate First Player each turn. There are a lot of house rules that can be applied to make the games work well. Try them out and decide for yourself what works best for you.

@Gilarius is correct, on many points, the best point is, get in there and blow some ships away, then re-spawn and do it again = fun.

"Quickdraw" (45)
Fanatical (2)
Deuterium Power Cells (9)
Homing Missiles (5)
Special Forces Gunner (10)
Passive Sensors (3)

...or wait, you have 85 points to spend? Well, let's fatten Quicky up:

"Quickdraw" (45)
Snap Shot (7)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Shield Upgrade (6)
Special Forces Gunner (10)
Pattern Analyzer (5)

and even: Fire Control System (2)

I wonder if snapshot and cluster missiles are worth it, since both conflict with each other and quickdraw's ability. She has only one bonus attack to spend among them.

Point 1: you have the points.

Point 2: sometimes Snap Shaot simply comes into play and gets you a crazy lucky kill.

Point 3: Cluster Missiles, at the right/specific time, are wicked good.

...but hey, season to taste.

Change to Homing Missiles. Homing Missiles will always get you that First Blood.

Everytime someone has called me on it, I have done more than 1 damage. It's proton torpedo lite, just take the one damage.

If you want a good time, look no further than

Anakin Skywalker (Y-Wing) (60)

Dorsal Turret (3)

Adv. Proton Torpedoes (6)

R2 Astromech (5)

Afterburners (6) Ship total: 80 Half Points: 40 Threshold: 4 Total: 80 View in Yet Another Squad Builder 2.0: https://raithos.github.io/?f=Galactic Republic&d=v8ZsZ200Z359XW137W134WW2WW105&sn=Unnamed Squadron&obs=

Zoom in, afterburners if you need to, roll 5 hits, take some damage, reload and regen on the way out, come back in for more violence. You even get the burners back when you die lmao.
