Favorite system for a B-wing (1e specific).

By LTuser, in X-Wing

For those, like me who still play 1e games...

What is your favorite system, to put on a B-wing?

Does it change if your B-wing takes the E-2 mod so it can have a crew slot, say with Sabine Wren??

It's been a while, but I seem to recall Fire Control being the go to system for most ships with a system slot, especially Ace-ish ones. Even lower PS B-wings can still get good mileage out of FCS since their tight turns or Barrel Roll action allow them to cast a wide net on where the Locked ship might be going next turn.

Keyan definitely enjoys FCS with his ability and PTL.

I know there was fun jank to be had with an E2 variant with Sabine, Extra Munitions, and Trajectory Simulator...

E2 with Jan Ors crew and Sensor Jammer could be very durable...

I've forgotten what crew more generally gelled with the B-wings.

Skimming some old lists I can see the immediate appeal of Hera and Maul riding with Keyan as well.

Hera lets Keyan do any maneuver including K-turn if the target slipped by and he didn't get a chance to spend that stress.

Maul I don't remember the exact wording but I remember Keyan+Maul was seen as a free targeting alternative to Fire Control because Maul gets you rerolls while stressed and then you spend the stress for focus results. With this you don't care about needing to follow the same target every turn or getting your lock removed by something like Black One or Jam! Keep this one lean and mean and skip the Sensor and any other upgrade except maybe an Elite like PTL to keep the stress coming.

Keyan with Kyle Katarn and FCS is a lot of fun.

It was always a toss up between FCS and Advanced Sensors when it came to B-Wings because of how restrictive the dial is and how efficient the FCS is.

Second edition was by far my favorite rules system to put on a B-wing.

...

What?

Lol. AdvSen. On Stay on Target Keyan.

Edit: oh I forgot, I'd put engine upgrade on him too for maximum insanity.

FCS seems entirely outclassed by Linked Batteries. Different slot, but it just seems better. Same price, vastly higher targeting flexibility, works immediately rather than forcing you to wait a round. I'd never take FCS if I could go with Linked Batteries, except maybe in a "Gunner" build, but Gunner builds are wicked expensive probably bad.

The build I always wanted to try but never got a chance to was Linked Batteries and Thrust Controller (is that right? the 1-point one where you could take a stress to cancel your green dice and add an Evade?). Anyhow, running 4 of those would be pretty beastly. You'd be hard to kill due to really consistent green dice without spending tokens, and you'd have a powerful attack with Focus/Reroll.

A friend of mine wound up trying the build, sort of, with 3 of them and a Captain Rex TIE, all with Tactician. That might have been the secret sauce. When you're putting stress on your opponents, it doesn't matter as much that you might be taking stress yourself.

Advanced Sensors was sweet, though. On a plain generic, AdvS was probably the best. Won a world championship, it did.

There were some interesting cards at the end of 1st Edition that were in the realm of decent, that would be bonkers good in 2nd Edition, this being one of them. Ten, Braylen, and 4-LOM would jump on this upgrade.

This was decent to good at the end of 1st, but man would this be super good in 2nd.

Thrust Corrector is one card I completely forgot about. Wow.

I preferred Advanced Sensors on B-wings, but sometimes it just didn't make sense with the points. FCS and Adv. Sensors were always two cards that I thought should have had their prices swapped in 1E. Thank goodness for flexible points.

Oh the nostalgy: 1ed B-wings ❤️ ! I had some fun with this B-wing build:

Keyan Farlander - Veteran Instincts - Adv. Sensors - Maul - B-wing/E2

With PS9 and Adv. sensors BR you could do some semi-acey shenanigans. Additionally you can easily shed 1-2 stress tokens gained from Maul with Keyans ability and hitting the target.

I had forgotten Linked Battery + Thrust Corrector! That was my combo of choice for B-wings at the very end of 1e.

Sabine on her own, is good, for bomb dropping B-wings, but adding in Trajectory simulator (IF you only do a 1 straight, so you're out of the blast radius of the bomb you just launched), is fun too.. But is that better than a mine equipped B-wing with sabine, and a mine-field mapper??

I hated Ten Numb built with T-Sim Sabine. When paired with Nym who could T-Sim as well and hold a bomb, it was annoying as **** to play against.

I had fun with Finn PTL and adv sensors on Keyan A lot of pts but could hit hard with 4 primary and 5 range 1
