I would like for this thread to be a place to share unlikely endings or happenings we all have had for some good natured laughs. Tonight I was trying out some different setups for Thor and I had 2 loses in a row that came out of nowhere. Playing against stage 1 Rhino there was 0 threat on the main scheme at the end of the Hero phase. 1 threat at the start of the Villain phase, 1 for his scheme +2 with the boost card, and then my encounter card is Advance (villain schemes again) also hitting +2 on the boost card. Game over. Thor was ever barely in alter-ego mode and needless to say I left him in hero mode for the entirety of the other games. It is more humorous now than when it happened for the simple fact of how unlikely it was to happen, especially 2 games in a row. What are some of everyone else's strange occurrences?
Unfortunate Loses
Captain Marvel vs Expert Rhino with the Doomsday Chair encounter set: Doomsday Chair side scheme coming out off the encounter deck, putting MODOK into play- spending the allies, resources, attacks, and taking the retaliate damage to get rid of MODOK... only for the second Doomsday Chair side scheme to come out a turn later bringing MODOK back from the discard pile. Next encounter card- Shadows of the Past, bringing out Yon-Rogg and the Psyche Magnetron. Fun times despite the soul crushing. I think I actually ended up winning this one but the flop of the encounter deck was way more memorable than the win or loss.
Sometimes I get excited when the encounter deck really wreck us the way it's supposed to. I'm really looking forward to the Taskmaster nemesis coming up as a boost card giving like +8 atk or sch and having no way to deal with it- that will make for a memorable moment. Also, can't wait for Baron Mordo to wreck us.
I've told my own hilarious loss some time ago in another thread, but here it is again as the official record. đ
I was playing Protection Spider-Man against Rhino, Bomb Scare and Running Interference. I had the Media Coverage attachment on my hero, which makes you resolve the When Revealed effects one additional time. I did not have the resources to discard it on my following turn so I ended it with the attachment still on me, as I figured I was good to go for at least one Villain phase, to be re-evaluated later on depending on what would happen next.
Then came the Villain phase, with Rhino Stage 2 still at full health:
- I had only lost 1 health since the beginning of the game, but as a precaution I still decided to defend against Rhino's attack, without having Indomitable in play. I therefore exhausted the hero.
- The first encounter card I drew was Hard To Keep Down. Rhino was full health, so he could not heal, so this got Surge. Because of Media Coverage, it surged twice.
- First surge, I draw Stampede. I'm already exhausted, Backflips are in my discard pile. Rhino attacks me twice.
- Second surge, I draw Assault. Rhino attacks me twice again.
Game over.
Is surge a âwhen revealedâ effect for the purposes of Media Coverage? I always thought this only covered the things that specifically state âWhen Reveale:â in bold.

âWhen Revealedâ ability only.
Under Fire is an example of a card which has a surge-like effect in the When Revealed ability.

You are correct. Surge on its own would only trigger once. Surge when part of a when revealed effect would happen twice. In the case if âHard to keep downâ, the surge is part of the when revealed effect. When revealed the card tries to heal rhino. If it canât do that it surges. Because of âmedia coverageâ it would try to heal rhino twice, fail twice, then surge twice.
