(Refined) Tel Trevura's death (?)... discussion

By topacesteve, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello, i saw older posts about Tel Trevura...let us please clarify based on the latest rules refence... so i set the questions :

A. Τel Trevura with Dead man's switch gets killed by a 5 init ship....in the Aftermath does he get to use Dead man's switch and then get destroyed? and pay the Charge?

can he play DMS a 2nd time when hes truly dead?

B. Tel Trevura is killed by a 4 init ship and (Trevura) hasn't fire back... Does he shoot 1st and then after this attack he is desrtroyed and plays immediately the Charge from his ability?

C. Trevura's ship strays off the map or its Maneuver does....is he destroyed immediately and pays the Charge to revive ????? Or is since he got off map he is instantly removed?

Thank you !!!

A. No - The destruction doesnt happen because Tel's ability replaces it with removal instead. Deadman doesnt trigger.

When a replacement effect resolves, the replaced effect is treated as having not occurred.

B. No, Tel's ability triggers in step A of the aftermath step (defending player abilities that dont grant a bonus attack), Tel doesnt even get to his engagement step. Simultaneous fire will only trigger if Tel is actually destroyed (Which as said above, Tel's ability prevents)

RR pg 18

To represent that ships with the same initiative are essentially attacking at thesame time, if a ship is destroyed during the Engagement Phase,

C. No. A ship that flees is simply removed from the game. It is not destroyed so it does not get to trigger abilities that trigger from being destroyed.

RR pg 17

After a ship is destroyed or flees,it is removed from the game.

@Lyianx nailed it. Tel antics really got screwed by the aftermath update. It seems that each RR update for some Separatists mechanic somehow screws over Scum: Tractor mechanics, timing queue, aftermath. Please, FFG, just errata the card and not the whole game.

There are actually two alternate ways to interpret the first two situations: You always have the option to NOT use Tel's ability. If you choose not to, Tel will be destroyed , but he gets to perform all the usual things that happen during the Aftermath step, and would still get to participate in Simultaneous Fire situations.

A. Τel Trevura (with DMS) killed by higher-initiative ship: At the time Tel Trevura is dealt lethal damage, you have a choice to make. You can, obviously, spend his charge to activate his ability and run to fight another day. You can also choose to NOT spend his charge, at which point you are committing to his death. In this case, Dead Man's Switch would indeed trigger when he is removed from the table. Why would you do this? Maybe Tel is surrounded by other ships on the verge of death, and his DMS explosion would take out one or more other ships - a beneficial trade for you.

B. Tel Trevura (second player) killed by same-initiative (first player) ship: Once again, you have a choice once Tel Trevura receives lethal damage. You can spend his charge, at which point he immediately goes into reserves. He would not get to perform his simultaneous-fire attack. ALTERNATELY , you can decline to spend his charge, which means Tel will die; in this case, though, he does get to perform his standard initiative-4 attack, and any "upon death" triggers like Dead Man's Switch will also activate when he's removed.
