Return to Where Doom Awaits - Unwinnable Situation?

Spoilers ahead

My partner and I recently got the Return to Dunwich to play, and we came across a situation in Where Doom Awaits that seems unwinnable. I'd like to know other people's thoughts.

In "Return to", Base of the Hill and Ascending Path are changed so they each have 3 clues, and when you discover one, it exchanges for a location. I presume to give characters who do tricks like using spells or flashlights to investigate a chance, as they were formally not compatible here.

Anyways, We were at the second part of the game. Ascending path had 3 clues. We fine one, discover a location and clear it of clues. We go back to Ascending Path, and discover a new location.

So, Ascending path has 1 clue left, my partner has 2 clues and there are 2 on the new location. Encounter deck time. My partner gets Spaces Between, so the locations are shuffled back.

Next round, I search, spend the last clue from Ascending Path get a new location, enter it and find a clue. We are up to 3. My partner is dealing with the enemy that was hunting us. Back to the Encounter Deck, and we draw another Spaces Between.

We have 3 clues, need 4 to enter the Peak location. There are no clues left on Ascending Hill. Is that the end? Are we done? In the old version, you can find a location a second time, but with the clue restriction, that's not possible. It seems like an oversight that there are a finite number of clues on Ascending Path and an encounter card that negates your progress. Typically locations like that re spawn clues, but this one doesn't seem to.

It looks like you fundamentally misunderstood how Spaces Between works. It doesn't remove the locations you've found from play, merely flips them back over and shuffles them around so you don't know which is which. You don't need to re-use Ascending Path/Base of the Hill to put them back into play, there's no inherent cost to entering them once they're in play, and indeed when you re-enter the locations they will spawn the listed number of clues, potentially reducing the total number of locations you need to find in order to advance.

Oh wow, I have been playing that wrong. Thanks for clearing it up.
