Size of Miniatures?

By Draii, in Talisman

This might have been adressed in an older post (haven't seen any) and I am one expansion after, since I just bought Frostmarch...BUT...
What's up with the weird sizes of the miniatures?

I don't know how they are created, if they are hand-sculpted in that size, or made in a 3D-program and "printed" in plastic, but one might think that they could use the other figuresas reference to get the sizes right.

In the core game there where some ofshots as the HUGE dwarf and the big wizard and minstrel (and some more), and now the expansions seems to go the other way with a small gladiator and the miniature-head of the philosopher (very clear next to big-headed characters as the monk and such).

Now when I got the Frostmarch the Warlock and the Necromancer was even smaller than the gladiator and looks like hobbits next to some of the "older" characters. Can't say anything about the Leprechaun and the Ogre since they ain't humans, guess they're good.

How's the miniatures in Highlands? Still shrinking or have they managed to hold a good size. (yeah, Sprite should be small =))
I know other games with miniatures has this problem too, in size-increase or size-decrease over sets, but it's sad to se still another game have the same problem.

Sure one can argue that we don't know the "real" sizes of these exact characters and mayhap it's correct that the warlock is one head shorter than the wizard and such, just as normal people may be, but they are meant to be archetypes and be symbolic for their classes.
Not a important issue, good rules is more important, agree, but the game is visually beautiful and I'm a bit sad to see such "flaws".

Hoping for good sizes in future expansions, love the game.

It is for sure something I have been looking at too. It seems like it can't be decided what size they should be made in. I wish that they would have stayed to the standard of 30mm scale. My first look at Highlands minitures impressed me, but after looking again I also see the heads differs from the first made miniatures and in scale some seem to be more like 28mm rather than 30mm.

In my opinion the miniatures that have been most out of scale is the Dwarf, Warlock and Necromancer.

As I am sculpting miniatures that can be used with Talisman, I would realy like to know what scale I should go for. Right now I go for the 30mm, but I think they have put the standard (if any) a bit down.

I would also like to know how they are created, if they are handmade or digital rendered and printed out.

cheers

The Vampiress too, her head was TINY! She stands about two heads shorter than other characters and barely reaches the top of the necromancer's (smallest human figure) hat. The alchemist was supposed to be elven or something I guess, so his being short (taller than the Vampiress, though!) didn't upset me as much.

The other characters height differences are slightly less noticable, and the style is more realistic than with the original characters, but head size is a huge difference, and the original characters will always tower over the others... Not all that big of a deal (I'm just glad we get minis of the characters instead of cheap cut-outs) but quite noticable in the game for some of the characters (especially Necromancer, Vampiress, Warlock, and the giant dwarf lengua.gif )!

I'm curious though, which style does everyone prefer? I'm torn between the larger, more comical art of the originals and the decidedly more realistic (but smaller) look of the new characters...

I can't say I was impressed with the highland minis

The plastic bends to easily leaving spears and staffs prone to warping

the scale is inconsistant with previous minis. Which is a real shame.

The plastic is so thin in places it's translucent.

the actual sculpture of the models is fine they seem to have been let down by sloppy production. The thought kinder egg toy springs to mind.

One of the main reasons I got the 4th ed edition was for the minatures (I had previously tried converting games workshop minis) though the extra expansion support kept me with it.

I am currently painting minis. I am a games workshop addict and have won several comps. It takes me 2 to 3 months (depending on work) to paint these minis. I am wondering if the high land minis are worth the time.

p.s. all other aspects of high lands I'm happy with just the minis

I too think the mini's are far too small...why reduce the size of the minis in the first place.

I also think the Dwarf is one of the worst mini's in the game. I have substituted in a Dwarf from my GW collection...

My new min's look silly along side the Highlander one's...

I also don't think it had 30 quids value IMO which is a fiver short I paid for the main Talisman set...

Sorry for the rant...voicing my opinion!

In the question about large (comical) heads, or smaller (realistic) heads, I root for the larger ones. I think they're fine and works well with rest of the design, and it's nice to be able to see some facial features.

I guess I'm among the people that had been spoiled by the quality of Games Workshop miniatures. I have to remind myself time and again that these are one of the best mass produced minis on Earth lengua.gif

But even comparing with a regular cheap toy soldiers, Talisman minis look... substandard at best. I do like and appreciate an idea to make miniatures based on actual artwork on character cards but how this idea is executed is completely different matter. If you can tell at a first glance that size and proportions are off, without even setting minis side by side, then something is wrong indeed.

I was thinking for a long time now about going back to "standees" from 2ed or BI edition. They are classy, more visible on board (I'm not much of a painter) and also easier to store.

Alright. I've got the Highlands now, and just as the Sorcerer King and others say, they are small =(

I agree that the new miniatures might have a bit more realisitc look, but I prefer the original ones.
These are just thin and tiny. Put the Highlander next to the warrior for instance. Do you see Rob-Roy next to Madmartigan? More like Frodo next to Conan.

Will not keep ranting about this more. But I sure hope they will set for a scale that the majority of the miniatures in the game already have, and use it.
These new ones will be a nightmare to paint good for a beginner like me too =P
