So locally, my friends and I are getting a bit tired of how many if not most of our Legion games are coming down to the same sort of tropes: Vader and Luke, Gunlines and Snipers, Tauntauns and Dewbacks, a 1.4 FD or an AT-ST just parked at the back.
So we're going to try out making a list of units that we're not going to use (or limit the use of) in our games to try to bring more variety to them.
Some of the units are on the list because they are "Must Takes" in basically every game (i.e. Sniper Strike Teams). Some are there because their mechanics are well used and we want some variety. (i.e. the "nuance" of placing Vader or Luke in such a way that one of them can pop Son Of Skywalker or Implacable at the right moment and it comes down to a 50/50 die roll to see who gets to hit [and likely kill] who first).
So yes, anyone could just do this normally and not need a list but if one person is playing a "semi-serious" list vs a "net-crafted meta tournament list" at least one person may not have a good time and at the end of the day we do this for FUN. If this isn't for you, no worries, good luck in your competitive play.
OBVIOUSLY THIS IS FOR NON-COMPETITIVE PLAY
The list is a work in progress and as we play more (hopefully soon, but given the current public health situation we must all be patient) we will add/remove units from it as we see how everything interacts with each other. This is a reflection of our local scene and may not be a reflection of yours or of the community as a whole.
Restricted Imperial Units
- Darth Vader (Commander and Operative)
- General Veers (Maybe)
- Shoretroopers (and consequently the DF-90 Mortar)
- Scout Strike Teams
- Dewbacks
- AT-ST
- Limit of 2: DLT-19s
- [Krennic may show up here but he hasn't overtaken us the same way he seems to have in the meta]
Restricted Rebel Units
- Luke Skywalker (Commander and Operative)
- Princess Leia (Maybe)
- Commando Strike Teams
- 1.4 FD Laser Cannon
- Tauntauns
- Limit of 3: Rebel Trooper Squads
- Limit of X: Z6s (Maybe)
The other thing that I've done is to spend several monies and buy into Clone Wars (in fact my first sets just came in today, core sets coming in a week or two) as I'm stuck inside, off work and have way too much time on may hands. So that is another aspect that will add to switching it up.
I'm also keen to get some models that seldom see the table out with this. I think since it came out we've played a grand total of 1 game with the X-34 land speeder, not to mention how little the T-47 see's the table (I'm the only one who will play it, primarily for a laugh). Fleet Troopers, Snows, regular squads of Scouts and Commandos, etc... Also to not min/max squads. Running squads with "sub-optimal" heavy weapon upgrades, taking the Captains and Specialists giving units grenades on the odd occasion. Making list building a bit more interesting again instead of just copy pasting the same core of a list every game.
If anyone had tried this out, how did it go? Does anyone have any suggestions for things that could be added/removed? Are there units in your area that dominate which one might not expect?
