A wild virus appears! What do you do?

By Noosh, in Star Wars: Armada

So folks, we're in lockdown bannna hammock quarintine. I've noticed that in a forum about playing with plastic ships IN SPAAAAAAAACE! People seem that the are a little bit, shall we say touchier as of late.

The question is how are we all doing? What are we up to during our enforced vacation from the rest of the species? Will your hoard of butt paper make due or are you stareing at the last roll?

I haven't been able to play Armada because of this quarantine situation, but I'm still getting my Star Wars fix by playing an Empire at War mod.

Edit: Here's a trailer for the mod with Steam page links in the description if anyone is interested.

I've been playing with Tabletop Simulator & Discord. It's not the same, but it's enough of a fix.

Being a university student is not fun for me right now. I'm back living with my parents in frigid northern weather. Online classes aren't terrible except for Spanish. Trying to understand a foreign language coming through a computer when everyone in the house is slowing the WiFi is a challenge. On the plus side I've done a ton of reading which I definitely wouldn't have found time for at school.

VASSAL works good for against-another-person play.

Honestly, though, if you have the space - try just setting up a table and do the old-school-wargamer 'play the best you can against yourself' method. Armada works a LOT better at that than X-Wing! X-Wing is problematic because SO MUCH of the game is guessing your opponents intent and outmaneuvering them - that's really not a thing in Armada at all. Once deployment is done, your enemy's plan is relatively obvious and your best defense against it is, too, so the game just comes down to a question of which plan works better.

Then tweak both lists to account for discovered weaknesses, and try again.

Still at work, 'cause we're an essential business, baybee!

Well, maybe IT isn't essential, but we make sure the people who are essential can do their jobs, so...

same to me.

but after 2 frantic week putting everyone at home and working, next weeks should be more flatlined, maybe half -time work and half-time painting....

Now the playgrounds and schools are closed, I look after two high-energy children who get up before 6am, and I whimper softly and beg for oblivion from about 11am.

May I suggest Doom Eternal as a stress relief for that. Nothing says I'm done with this like chainsawing a demon in half!

A good call! Play those angry triangles!

Mainly cleaning and gaming (Battlefront 2, Hollow Knight and Endless Space 2 are very good and very time-consuming) until the quarter begins. Still getting outside to exercise, but avoiding human contact like... well, the plague.

I miss pushing plastic spaceships around the table, and have a lot of lists ready to try out by now. You know you’ve been fleet building too long when you’re making quad Pelta fleets...

May I suggest carrier pigeon, as a WiFi supplement? Added bonus, BIRDEMIC!

I wouldn't mind 14 days of self quarantine... I work for one of those "essential" businesses and it's absolutely crazy busy right now. Fortunately, our management really stepped up to handle this crisis and are taking great care of us. Unfortunately, we have a lot of customers who have no concept of what "essential" or "quarantine" mean, so they show-out with some serious attitude problems and are putting us directly at risk of exposure.

I feel for you my friend. People can be real jerks, but to you I don my resperator in respect of your fortitude and immense patients.

3 Darth Vader resperator hoooooo-perrr s for you and all essential workers. Who knew Darth Vader was a germaphobe with all that PPE!

Living at my "essential" job during all of this, and honestly I miss my dog. But I have lots of TP, my laptop, and my Armada collection so I'm keeping entertained and uhh, well wiped.

Unlimited TP=UNLIMITED POOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!!!!!! Also all you can't eat spicy food!

How about you, @Noosh ? Hanging in there?

I’m weathering the quarantine by learning to play X-Wing as well, and buying waaaay too many plastic spaceships on eBay & Amazon. Fortunately my wife is convinced that sorting cards, building Armada & X-Wing lists, and playing Vassal games with friends will keep me sane for the duration. All this, of course, usually has to wait until the stepkids are in bed.

It’s weird... a few years back, I decided I could take no more of cubicles and offices and ties (the lower-case variety of TIEs, that is), and dropped it all to work in a seasonal restaurant in what’s basically a resort town. It’s been great, but we’re closed from late November to... well, about now... every year. And this Covid thing has prevented us from opening, obviously. So I was already beginning to go stir-crazy when the announcement came that I now had to keep doing what I’d already been doing all winter. Only now I can’t get in weekly RitR games with the play group.

Which may explain why lately I’ve been crankier than usual about FFG’s marketing gaffes. 🙂
