Allies of convenience.

By ozmodon, in Star Wars: Legion

Jawas, Tusken Raiders, and Ewoks could be a lot of fun if there was an Allies of convenience slot added to the army building list. They wouldn't need full flushed out armies that way.

Thoughts?

I think all of them would work better as parts of the S&V faction

I don't want any allies in this game. One only needs to look at 40k/AoS to see how allies can ruin balance. I prefer the Legion way where cross faction units just have a uniy card for each faction, which allows them to balance points separately if needed.

Well, you just play Imperial Assault if you want to do that.

Not sure what this means? I was asking opinions on How best to introduce these sub factions.

Imperial Assault already does this. If FFG does that for Legion, it will probably be similar. I am not sure they will though.

I don't think Jawas or Tusken Raiders belong in any faction. They have no loyalties to anyone or anything beyond themselves. Even Scum & Villainy wouldn't have a good use for them. I would rather see them as part of a Battle Plan Objective or Condition.

Ewoks did actually support the Rebels, so I could see them as a possibility for a Rebel unit. I imagine they'd be Special Forces (Corp doesn't seem right and nothing else allows for squads) with a personnel or heavy upgrade that can be used to bring Wicket, Logray or some other distinctive Ewok. It might be a little to weird to have them showing up all over the galaxy, though.

I also prefer cross faction units that have a uniy card for each faction. Also, we can imagine some Characters to have a keyword (similar to entourage) that give you the opportunity to hire a specific unit that is not suppose to be in your faction.

About a S&V faction, I would love to have it just to have some more fantastics minis, Hutts, nightsisters... But I doubt they must belongs to only one faction. They act/fight for there own objectives.

I also like the way rancor and tuskens are introduce to star Wars legion by Clever Clanker. It makes a lot of sense

What about Beldorion?

Not weirder than a list with Op Luke + Sabine + Jyn Erso + Endor Rebel commandos + Hoth 1.4 FD laser team 😉

I'm ok with some ewoks roaming in the galaxy. They could have jumped on a ship with Endor rebels leaving the planet because they enjoyed beating the Empire, and want to crush some new skulls ^^

And not because they love Leia's Hugs?

Well, who doesn't? 🙂

There are Jawas traveling the galaxy. I can defenitly see them being hired as technicans and thus appearing as the Repair unit for a Scum & Villainy faction. However, they are also other models that would suit that role like Droids or Ugnaughts (that appear on Cloud City).

This is the eternal struggle. Pickup games, devoid of a Game Master, has ruined balance. Points-match play can never be truly balanced without sacrificing background and flavor. Not even chess is perfectly balanced. Balance is to be striven for but never fully attained.

There's nothing restricting any rank in the game from having more than one model in the unit. In fact, we have an upcoming Commander (who can also be an Operative) that can have 2 models in the unit. Every unit card in the game has a spot with a number for how many models are in the unit, and nothing is restricting any of them to be only "1."

Much rather a jawa show up as the repair figure in the S&V Merc faction.

Tusken Raiders and Jawas were more Tatooine centric as Ewoks were on Endors moon. More primitive societies didn't travel through space much. Most wookiees didn't ever leave kashyyk until they were sold into slavery after the clone wars.

S&V faction should have more of the pirate groups that we see in the films and cartoons.

I think they would be well suited to a special scenario in a terrain pack.

Tuskens, Rancor, and Jawas could come in tattooine terrain box

Ewoks could come in an official Endor terrain box

This way they would be tied into a narrative scenario, and you could have more special rules around them.

I be ok with that route. Bantha and tusken raiders in a certain scenario. Shoot, the bunker cost $75 or whatever. They could include a bantha and 25 tusken raiders that invade while you're trying to fight your battle. They come sweeping in from Beggar's canyon and start wiping out your units, capturing your moisture vaporators and wreaking havoc

The clone wars has a lot of tribes that could be allies in one form or another.

And this is why allies are a bad idea. When you give everyone access to the same unit, balance becomes that much more difficult as synergy across all factions has to be considered.

A Jawas or Tuskens "condition" would be pretty interesting, basically use AI rules to have them act like a unit which can interfere with objectives and attack either side (given how we've seen both races be real dicks to passers by), but I wouldn't go for making them a full out "neutral" unit except in home play (where obviously, you know you're doing something wonky). As noted, making weapons/surges etc balanced across all factions can be a bit weird, and if they're too good they just push out the actual thematic units of the faction (and if they're too bad, nobody will play them over their normal squads).

Actual friendly aliens should be like the Rebel Wookiee unit, and just be in their appropriate faction (such as squads of Gungan or Mon Cal infantry in Republic, or Geonosian or Umbaran infantry for CIS).

If I had my way, there would be a Cartel/Crime Syndicate full faction. Neutral unit subfactions that can be used in any list. And these tiny, one off groups, like Sand People, should be left to terrain packs with special rules. They would be fighting against both players.

Yeah. I think they need to be designed intentionally. Some should be terrain scenarios, there could be certain allies that could be taken but they need to be balanced and designed for all units like the weapons in Vital Assets(not sure if its worth the effort over faction-specific units like umbarans and genosians would be for CIS), and most importantly, there needs to be a separate Scum/Cartel/Pirate faction.
