this forum is getting silly......some of you would complain about a tiddly-winks game....

Well yeah! Tiddly-winks has clearly become unbalanced since the new edition rules came out. Like winks is hardly even viable in this meta!

As much as I agree with this, Id hazard a guess that the competitive scene (for those that care about it) wouldn't be the same without TTS which as I mentioned earlier also steps on the IP.

Yeah, it'd be better. 😛

Since TTS has blown up, I haven't attended even a local tournament for an FFG game without running into players who have logged more hours in the current meta than I ever will in all of my time in the game. This includes stuff like launch events for Destiny. People have been playing with spoiled cards for weeks or longer and have tons of reps with a card that I'm using for the first time. They'll know all the counters before I even know the set.

I don't begrudge people finding ways to play games they love on the internet and I appreciate that the most competitive people also need to get their reps in for regionals, worlds (or whatever FFG is calling those after the rebrand 😛 ) before they pay good money to fly to a place and trying to win. I know I'm rarely the best or even very good at these games, so I don't mind when I lose as long as I play well. I'd probably play on TTS too, if I didn't have other stuff I'd rather be doing with my screen time.

But personally, I know I am less likely to go to an event where I know I'm probably going to get paired up against someone who's just going to kick my teeth in. For something like Destiny, it's less of an issue when each match is < an hour. If I'm going to a Legion event where I know I'm going to be in for 7 hours or so for three rounds... that's a lot more to ask.

Exactly, and given that the playing time I've had since November is zero TTS is looking sweeter by the minute,.especially as given that my outlook on play time is looking worse in the current environment. Playing Legion on TTS would be better than not playing at all given the investment I've put into the game financially and in time. Like you I go to tournaments and I feel I put in a good show, but those that play on TTS end up being in a level above, so I'll never be top 8 at worlds, but I feel that other than 1 tournament I could actually manage that.

(Edit this came out the completely wrong way, I meant to get across I reckon I can manage to do well at the tournaments I go to , to at least get an invite, not that I could top 8 at worlds)

I hear ya. I’m not a fan of the spoiler driven, play things before they are available culture of gaming in general. I get sucked into checking for updates anyway! I think being in the present moment is important and one thing I appreciate about the in-person physical games is the ability to experience that. TTS can cultivate practice but I don’t think it duplicates the experience.

I actually find it to be more of an issue with card games since there are specific interactions and deck building strategies. I feel like I can bring a list and be competitive in Legion with a sound personal strategy. It does mean practicing and fine tuning a list, but since so much of the in-game strategy is based on positioning and command decisions, I don’t find testing lists on TTS gives as big of an advantage as developing a reliable combo in a deck building game.

To me the most comparable thing is fan art/plush you can buy at conventions, etsy, etc. Certainly a very big community and no one seems to have an issue with that.

Disney has shut down "fan art/plush" in the very recent past. For instance: Baby Yoda plush on Etsy.

Many conventions have policies in place limiting fanart, and I have heard of C&D letters being handed out in artist alleys in the past.

That’s not true at all... if you think they’re the same thing you’re crazy. The reason GW lost PART of that case was that Cadians looked too much like modern real word soldiers (which can’t be copyrighted), or it was just generic looking vehicles (jet bikes). If you think that same thing would happen with the bad batch then you don’t know what you’re talking about. Chapter house still had to pay GW $25,000 because they lose on a lot of those claims.

But to me it’s more about the principal. No one would want those products if they were some generic models, or an idea skullforge etc came up with. The only reason people want to pay them money for those models is because of the IP (something that isn’t their idea). This to me is worse than those who post movies for download. Those people aren’t even charging for it, skullforge is.

Strangely... I am good friends with a lawyer involved, but yeah, oh well. 😉

What's your point?

That I have had long conversations on this topic.
Sure chapterhouse had a fine, a relatively small one compared to the business they were doing. The case makes it clear that you may produce kits and models that can be used for game systems without fear. You need to be a little careful about names, and make sure there is attribution if you use images not your own, but after market miniatures and accessories are now treated like after market car parts. Also make sure all the work is your own. 😉
The thing that does surprise me is that FFG let's it go on here in their own forum.
