2010 Washington D.C. Regional Championship results

By finitesquarewell, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hey everyone,

A full workup of the results for the DC regional are here:

Results on the AGoTWiki

I'm going to force you to go to the wiki to get all the juicy details, but in short:

13 players, with a very good distribution of decks

Top four after five rounds of Swiss, in order: Erick Butzlaff (Lanni), Alec Irwin (Bara), Dan Strouhal (Targ), Rob Jones (Stark)

Final game: Erick and Dan

Champion: Erick

Thanks so much to everyone who showed up -- the tournament ran well ahead of schedule, and everyone had a good time.

nicely done Erick... not a bad turn-out, but West Coast had 22!!! where you at NY??? i don't want to see my boy be wrong... And Dan's the Man if any of y'all was curious!!! :) nice job hermano!!!

Erick: Thanks for all your hard work on setting this up! Also, the final round was fun...I'll have to fine-tune this Targ deck a bit more for our NYC rematch :P

Great Venue. Great Games. I was very pleased to see the variety of houses represented. In my opinion it was a very good distribution. I actually expected to see a little more greyjoy then the 2 that were represented. I guess part of that is my fault since I was intending to run Greyjoy right up till the night before.

In the end I chose Stark. Key cards in my Stark Deck included:

Frozen Moat: Blanking characters printed text like Robert B's double Renown, Stannis' Need a lord, and Carrion Bird remove shuffle of raven were huge in several games.

Northern Infantry: Does not kneel to defend when opponent is not running an agenda. This card coupled with Frozen Moat really kept stark defense alive. I actually expected to see more Agenda's then I did. If I had, Northern Calvary Flank would have been the star.

Kings of Summer Agenda for draw: Samwell I think only came out once the entire day. I guess that is very Nedly considering how Sam's views on fighting ~. So keeping it summer with frozen moats and carrior birds was important.

I'll try and post a decklist soon if people are interested.

Thanks Erick for a well run event. Everything went smoothly and ahead of schedule. I had fun and thanks to some good luck, I left with the only swag I really wanted. It was nice to meet and play against Rob and the the lesser known members of the DC meta and a pleasant reunion with the greater East Coast meta. Lookin forward to NY even more now.

I ran Greyjoy/Winter, and my only 2 losses were Stark/Summer and Lannister/Shadows, both played by better players. Congrats to the winners, especially Alec for his first top 4 finish at a Regional event!

Yeah, Alec's deck gave headaches...probably the worst match up for my Targ deck at the event. Very nice deck, Alec!

What worked Well

King's of Summer agenda worked well. I was fearful of playing it as I was expecting alot of GreyJoy winter. However Frozen Moat and my own carrion birds
were able to at least keep it neutral whenever I faced greyjoy.

Frozen Moats were just awesome and probably were what kept me in the games especially against Alec's Baratheon deck.
The non kneeling Armies were good as well. I expected to see more agendas then I did, so Northern Infantry
did a better job then Northern Calvary Flank. The Distinct Mastery and To be a wolf's always help against Lannister. Bound by duty never came out once but still
a solid choice against Lanni.

What didn't work out so well...

Calm over Westeros did not work as well as I thought it might. I never seemed to play it at the right time. I think I would have had to start off
with this plot against Lanni, but there was always something more important to play. By the time I played the plot, Lanni had pleanty of gold to pay for any events.
I would have been better off with another 2 claim plot, or maybe Rains of Autumn.

Things I probably would change .

1. Ditch Calm Over Westeros. Replace with a 2 claim plot.
2. Maybe replace Osha with a 2nd Cat o Canals. Her plus Northern Steel should give opponents fits.
3. Add a 3rd frozen moat. Not sure what to remove it it's place. Maybe just go to 61 cards.

Still overall I was pleased with how the deck performed. It's lifetime is shortlived, with the upcoming stark expansion, but it was a fun deck to play and I had a blast.

Congratulations to the winners and to the champion. Looks like a good time was had by all, and in the end, that's the most important part of any tournament in my mind.

Orclrob, thanks for posting your deck and the thoughts about it. I always find such things to be interesting reads. I'm with you regarding the LoW expansion. Once it finally hits retail here in North America, I think most Stark decks will be retooled. I will probably end up with two Stark decks myself, since I have a winter-themed one currently that I'm very reluctant to take apart.

I hope others will follow suit and post similar write-ups of their decks and experiences (of course, I don't expect to see such detail from those who still intend to attend other regionals or tournaments until the season is complete). I'm most curious about plots, what worked, why, and what one would change if running the same deck again.

Dan and I will be posting our decklists after the Kingsmoot in NYC, just in case we chose to reuse our decks for that. I'll try to get Alec to pass me a list of his cool Bara deck after NYC, too.

~I'm not sure "cool" is the word I would use to describe Alec's deck...I was swearing in my head during both games against him. (Alec, that's a very solid deck you have there...not looking forward to playing against it in NYC :P )
