To be fair, ripping souls off their path to the gates of meido isn't new.

Hiruma, nee Kaikoga, Masami, was an ex Moth-clan shujenga who was able to 'hide' the souls of the Hiruma defenders of Shiro Hiruma from Atsumari no Oni. Kaede's new achievement was pushing said soul back into the original body, but redirecting it from natural progression after death had been done before.

She didn't rip them from Meido though, she redirected them to the land of dreams instead of letting an Oni consume them before they died. Its an important distinction.

Also her ritual only effected those who died while she was conducting it.
